Oles end regular season with Senior Day sweep

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College baseball team swept UW-Superior, 6-3, and, 11-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Mark Almli Field on Sunday afternoon.

St. Olaf (26-13) honored the six members of the St. Olaf baseball Class of 2019, including: Jake OssellThomas PetersonSam StuckmayerLogan Kinsell, Luke Dahl and David Besky. The Class of 2019 accumulated 68 career wins and have led St. Olaf to its first appearance in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIA) Playoffs since 2009 this season.

St. Olaf scored all six runs in the first three innings of the first game and held UW-Superior (15-20) to just six hits to pick up the victory in game one. After four scoreless innings by the Oles and the Yellowjackets in the second game, St. Olaf scored eight runs in the fifth and three in the sixth on their way to a sweep over UW-Superior.

The Oles scored early runs in the first three innings and kept the Yellowjackets scoreless for the first four.

Seven Oles each recorded a hit in the game, while TJ Rogersand Cameron Gray each added two RBI. Max Marshall tossed a complete game and picked up his third victory of the season.

St. Olaf took an early lead in the first as Dylan Blake doubled to center field and Tommy McDonald crossed home place.

A triple to right center from Rogers in the second scored two runs to put the Oles on top at 3-0. Rogers scored on a wild pitch as St. Olaf took a four-run lead heading into the third.

Gray picked up two RBI on a single through the left side to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Yellowjackets answered in the fifth with an RBI single, followed by a run due to a St. Olaf error to make the score 6-2.

UW-Superior scored a run in the sixth on a double to left center, but the Oles held off the Yellowjackets in the top of the seventh to pick up the victory.

After five scoreless innings by both teams, the Oles had eight runs in the fifth and three in the fourth to take an 11-0  lead and held of the Yellowjackets for St. Olaf.

Rogers, Andrew Nomoto and Sam Pressman each tallied two hits, and Nomoto added three RBI. Sam Stuckmayer had two hits, four RBI and one run, and Bobby Isbell added two RBI.

The game saw five Ole pitchers, including two innings from Forrest Kobelt, as he had two strikeouts, and Ben Arndt picked up the victory in two innings at the mound.

In the first inning, Kobelt recorded both of his strikeouts on back-to-back batters, and St. Olaf held one runner on base to keep the Yellowjackets scoreless.

Nomoto doubled to center field in the bottom of the fourth and Dahl was walked, but the Oles were unable to convert as both runners were left on base.

Blake broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to right field that sent Travis McDonald home.

After Rogers singled and Matthew Muller was walked, Nomoto hit a three-run triple to right field to make the score 4-0. Another triple to right field came from Stuckmayer, as he picked up three RBI and extended the Oles' lead to 8-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Pressman RBI singled to send Muller home and a double down the left line gave St. Olaf a double-digit lead. Isbell had a sacrifice fly to right field to account for the Oles final run of the game.

UW-Superior scored a run off of a single to left field in the top of the seventh, but St. Olaf held the Yellowjackets to one run off two hits in the inning to pick up the victory.

The Oles return to action on Thursday, May 9 against Saint John's for the first game of the MIAC Playoffs at CHS Field in St. Paul, beginning at 6:30 p.m
