Oxy Sweeps Redlands, No. 3 Seed in Playoffs

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental baseball team finished the regular season strong, sweeping Redlands with a pair of road wins on Saturday.

Oxy won the first game, 9-4 and then the second game, 11-8.

The Tigers have clinched the No. 3 seed in the four-team SCIAC Playoffs that determine the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Oxy will play at No. 2 La Verne in Game 1 of the double-elimination tournament. The remainder of the games on Saturday and Sunday will be played at No. 1 Chapman.

The Tigers, which finish the regular season with an overall record of 28-12 and SCIAC record of 16-8, also have a chance to move up even higher in the NCAA West Region poll. Oxy was fourth headed into the weekend and can continue to position for possible at-large consideration for the NCAA playoffs. 

Diego Ramirez was the standout pitcher on Saturday, earning two saves in four scoreless innings, with six strikeouts and no walks. Cade Denyer also had big relief appearances, getting key outs in tight spots to get the ball to Ramirez. 

Oxy's offense got big contributions by a number of players in both games, highlighted by Jack Brancheau, Angelo Zorn, Antonio Andrade and Bryan Smith, who all had two multi-hit games. Brancheau finished the day 5 for 9 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and an RBI, Zorn was 4 for 11 with five RBIs, three runs and a double, Andrade went 5 for 8 with four RBIs, a double and three runs, and Smith was 4 for 7 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.

Tom Butler earned the win in the first game and Justin Hirschberg got the win in the second.
