Lynx Continue Win Streak; Down Belhaven 7-4

Memphis - The No. 24 Rhodes College Lynx took on the Belhaven University Blazers in Jackson, Miss. Tuesday afternoon. A strong starting pitching performance by Rhodes' Jaxon Cady and a few key hits down the stretch seemed to be the difference maker for the Lynx to hold off the Blazers' comeback effort (7-4). Rhodes College is now winners of their last eight contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top of 2nd inning: The Lynx got on the board first when Chris Penna doubled home John McNair (1-0) and Willard Overstreet followed with a single to then plate Penna (2-0).

Top of 5th inning: Rhodes strung together multiple good at-bats in the inning as they capitalized off of four walks, a hit by pitch, an error, and a base knock to extend their lead (6-0). Wood Kimbrough's single to right field plated two runs.

Bottom of 7th inning: Belhaven began to chip away at the lead as a three run home run was hit to left field (6-3).

Bottom of 8th inning: The Blazers added to their total as two base hits helped lead home another run (6-4).

Top of 9th inning: Peter York singled to left field with Will Heurtin following, later in the inning, to bring home York (7-4).

Bottom of 9th inning: With the bases juiced in the final frame of the ballgame, Belhaven had an out to make something happen. Shreves struck out the final out of the game and sent the Lynx home with their eighth straight victory (7-4).

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Seven of the nine starters logged a base hit in the ballgame. Kimbrough led the way with two. Paul GiacomazziChris Penna, York, Heurtin, McNair, and Overstreet recorded one each.
  • Cady had an impressive start on the mound. He was able to toss seven strong innings, allowing only three hits, three runs, while striking out seven batters. Cady held the Blazers scoreless and to a lone hit for six inning.
  • Giacomazzi and Heurtin extend their hitting streak to 10 consecutive games. Giacomazzi's extends to 11 consecutive dating back to the final game of last season.
  • Kimbrough tallied a team leading two RBIs. Heurtin, Giacomazzi, McNair, Penna, and Overstreet tallied one each. Kimbrough has recorded an RBI in each of the Lynx games, this season, except for one.
  • Shreves recorded his second save on the season. He tossed a scoreless inning, allowing one hit, and striking out a batter.

 

WHAT'S NEXT:

Rhodes open up conference play on Sat., Feb. 29th as they take on No. 3 Birmingham-Southern College at Stauffer Field. First pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
