Covenant routs Sewanee, 16-3

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team scored nine runs in the first inning, capped by CJ Edmond's grand slam, and cruised to a 16-3 win in seven innings over visiting Sewanee on Wednesday afternoon.

It was a season-high tying 16 runs on 14 hits for Covenant (7-4) as the Scots improved to 6-2 at home on the year.

The Scots pounced on the visiting Tigers in the first inning. Covenant sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning and scored nine runs on five hits. Edmond capped the inning with a grand slam on a no-doubt shot to right field that plated Trevor Grapenthin, Kenny Mills, and Ken Alexander. The homer was Edmond's second of the year.

Earlier in the inning, the Scots got RBI singles from Mills and Grapenthin, while Alexander drew a bases loaded walk and Brooks DuBose had a sacrifice fly. Sewanee needed to use four pitchers to record three outs.

Covenant tacked on four more runs in the second inning. With two outs, Alex Gonzalez singled to left field to bring in Tyler Moore and Grapenthin also scored on an error by the Sewanee left fielder. Hunter Christian capped the frame with a two-run double to center field to make it 13-1.

Starting pitcher Nick Pettit was the beneficiary of all the run support. Pettit (1-2) earned his first career win as he tossed five innings and allowed three runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Joe Joe McDonald and Jack Richards tossed scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, respectively, to close out the run-rule victory.

The Scots added the final tallies in the fifth inning. Moore led off the frame with his first home run of the season and Christian added an RBI single later in the inning.

Christian led the 14-hit attack for the Scots with his 3-for-3 day with a run scored and three RBIs. Moore came a triple shy of the cycle as he finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Alexander had two hits and two runs in three at-bats, while Gonzalez also had two hits in three trips. Edmond was 1-for-2 with four RBIs and two walks.

Every Covenant starter had either a hit or a run scored in the lopsided win.

Jared Demkowicz had a home run and went 2-for-2 with two walks for Sewanee (7-4-1). Foster Olson (0-1) got the loss for the Tigers as he did not record an out in his start. Sewanee used eight pitchers in the contest.
