SAN ANTONIO, Texas (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Nationally No. 4/4 ranked Trinity University scored three runs in the first, four in the second and plated runs in each of the first four innings en route to a 10-1 victory over the New Jersey City University baseball team in game four of NJCU's 2020 spring Texas road trip on March 9 at the Trinity University Baseball Field.

Trinity, ranked fourth by both D3baseball.com and the preseason American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball poll, improved to 9-2 overall. The Gothic Knights (1-7) were playing their second game of the day after knocking off Howard Payne, 15-10, earlier in the day.

Trinity pitching limited NJCU to three hits while striking out 10 without issuing a walk. Freshman right-handed pitcher Cadhan McGahan (Davidson, N.C.) improved to 3-1, throwing 6.0 innings of two-hit ball, allowing one unearned run with five strikeouts. Freshman righty Jack Schmitt (St. Louis, Mo.) collected a three-inning save (1), striking out five against one hit.

Senior right fielder Rafe Chaumette (Sugar Land, Texas) led the 14-hit Trinity attack, batting 4-for-5 with three doubles, three runs and one RBI. Junior catcher Tyler Pettit (Round Rock, Texas) drove in three runs, batting 1-for-2 with a double while senior shortstop Michael Herrera (Phoenix, Ariz.) was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. The Tigers had seven doubles in the game.

Senior first baseman Seth Jones (Albuquerque, N.M.), junior third baseman Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore second baseman Blake Johnson (Houston, Texas) all had two hits to support the hosts win. The Tigers left 12 on base in the win.

Senior center fielder Juan Pena notched his 99th career hit to break up a no-hit bid with one out in the fifth. Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Bergalowski, the third of three NJCU pitchers used, had a good outing, allowing just one run and four hits in 4.0 innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Trinity scored three in the first. Chaumette doubled and scored on a wild pitch. A two-out single by Wisniewski extended it to 3-0 before Trinity left the bases full.
