Homers, steals propel Hood past Wildcats

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Hood College's Joe Kroeger and Matt Schopf homered and Dylan Beck had three of the Blazers' nine stolen bases in a 15-2 win over Penn College. 

At the Plate

  • It was the first career home run for both Kroeger and Schopf. Schopf hit a pinch grand slam in the ninth for the first grand slam in program history. 
  • Beck went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, in addition to his three steals. 
  • Nick Rampone and Jordan Patterson stole two bases apiece. Patterson walked three times and scored twice. 
  • James DeProspero doubled as part of a two-hit day. 

On the Mound

  • Hood used five pitchers in the game. Ryan D'Allesandro got the start and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk. He struck out two in three innings.
  • Jake Howell pitched the next three innings and allowed just one hit, striking out two. 
  • Des GrimesGabriel Gilger and Jake Crawford each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game. 

How it Happened

  • Hood scored in each of the first three innings to take control early. Beck had an RBI single in the first for a 1-0 lead. In the second, DeProspero doubled to right-center to knock in Andrew Wenner for a 2-0 lead. 
  • In the third, Beck added another RBI single before scoring on Joe Kroeger's two-run home run to left-center field to make it 5-0. 
  • The Wildcats got two runs back in the bottom half to stay in the game. Keegan Nytz led off the inning with a single and later scored and Brayden Lippert walked in the inning an scored on a base-hit by Jacob Carles. 
  • The score stayed that way until a four-run seventh for the Blazers. Patterson walked to start the inning and singles by DeProspero and Rampone loaded the bases. With two outs, Beck singled to drive in both Patterson and DeProspero for a 7-2 lead. Kroeger walked to load the bases and Trent Copenhaver singled two more runs for a seven-run advantage. 
  • Patterson led off the eighth with a walk, stole second and third, then scored on an error to make it 10-2. 
  • In the ninth, pinch hitter Andrew Perkins and Kroeger drew back-to-back walks. With one out, Danny Brennan and Patterson each walked to drive in a run. Schopf followed as a pinch hitter and took a pitch over the fence in left field for a grand slam to cap the scoring. 

Analysis

  • It was the third time this season that Hood has stolen nine bases in a game. 
  • The Blazers' 10 bases on balls were a season-high. 
  • It was the first time that the two teams had met since the first game in Hood baseball history, a 10-7 Blazer victory to open the 2015 season.

For the Opponent

  • Brittan Kittle had three hits for Penn College. 
  • Justin Porter allowed five runs in five innings to take the loss. He struck out four and walked one. 

Notes

  • Hood improved to 6-3. 
  • The Wildcats slipped to 1-4.
