Husson Baseball Falls to Wheaton (Mass.) on Day Two of Spring Trip, 2-9

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Husson University (1-4) suffered a 9-2 setback at the hands of Wheaton (Mass.) College (4-1) in the RussMatt Invitational on Sunday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Wheaton jumped out an early three run lead in the bottom of third when Jacob Studley smacked a three-run double to left center before the Lyons added two more runs in the fourth off an RBI fielder's choice by Stephen Quigley and a sacrifice fly by Brody Ashley.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wheaton struck once again off a Studley single through the left side sending home Ashley to make it a six-run game.

After a sacrifice fly by Nick Raposo pushing the Lyons advantage to seven in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles bats finally came to life in the top of eighth as Husson plated two runs off one hit and three Wheaton miscues. Ryan Hoogterp reached first on an error by the Lyons' shortstop, advanced to second on another Wheaton miscue before going to third on an infield single by Kobe Rogerson. Hoogterp wasn't at third for that long as he crossed home plate with Husson's first run of the game on the Eagles' next at-bat when David LeBlanc reached first on the third error of the inning by Wheaton, which allowed Rogerson advanced to third as well. Rogerson later scored off a Chris Ewanik fielder's choice to cut the Lyon cushion to five.

The Lyons platted two more runs in the home half of the eighth to account for the 9-2 final.
