Hampden-Sydney Baseball Earns Shutout At Piedmont 9-0

DEMOREST, Ga. -- Junior Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield and freshman Ryan Boyce/Suffolk each had two RBIs to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 9-0 non-conference baseball road win at Piedmont College on Wednesday afternoon in Demorest, Georgia. The visiting Tigers (12-4) used six different pitchers who combined for the seven-hit shutout victory. Freshman Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville gained the mound win in middle relief against the host Lions (10-7).

H-SC scored nine runs on 13 hits … scoring four runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and one run each in the third and sixth innings toward the final nine-run margin.

In the first, junior Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-3, RBI) had an RBI single to score senior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (4-5, RBI), who had singled—the first of his four hits on the day—with one out, and Clawson crossed the plate when Grohowski (1-2, 2 RBIs) added a run-scoring double. Grohowski and senior captain Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen (1-3, RBI) each scored during the at-bat, as well, when Boyce (2-5, 2 RBIs) contributed a two-run single. Spagnolo had reached on an error.

In the second, senior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (0-4) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored courtesy of a wild pitch. Senior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (3-5), who had three hits on the day, singled during the at-bat and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Grohowski. Clawson would cross the plate on another wild pitch—he had also walked.

In the third, senior Josh Duimstra/Montpelier (0-4) walked with one out, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Kasiski.

In the sixth, Kasiski singled again and later crossed the plate via a run-scoring single by Spagnolo.

Sophomore Nick Graziano/Virginia Beach was the first of the six Tigers on the mound and pitched the first 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Woodall (1-0) tossed the fifth inning, yielding one hit with one strikeout and no walks for his first collegiate pitching triumph. Sophomore Kieran Conway/Chesapeake pitched a perfect sixth, retiring three-straight batters with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Russell Bowles/Moseley tossed the seventh inning, yielding two hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox pitched the eighth inning, allowing two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Senior captain Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House tossed a perfect ninth inning with three strikeouts.

H-SC, winners of 12 of its last 14 games overall, will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Guilford College on Saturday, March 14, a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
