NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Jack Basse (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) homered and drove in three as the No. 11 Randolph-Macon baseball team outscored Christopher Newport 9-6 on Sunday afternoon.
The Basics
Score: #11 Randolph-Macon 9, Christopher Newport 6
Site/Venue: Newport News, Va./Captains Park
Records: R-MC 4-2, CNU 5-3
How It Happened
- After the Captains tallied single runs in each of the first two frames, sophomore outfielder Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) belted his first collegiate homer in the top of the third to cut the deficit in half.
- The Yellow Jackets took their first lead in the fifth. Junior Will Hass (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) led off the inning by reaching on an error and Basse smacked his first career home run as R-MC assumed a 3-2 edge.
- CNU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth before the Yellow Jackets went ahead for good in the sixth. Senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) reached on a one-out error and moved to second on a groundout. A single by junior JT Fitzpatrick (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) brought in Yeargain with the go-ahead run. A double by Hass plated Fitzpatrick and Hass would score on a single by Basse as the visitors took a 6-3 lead.
- R-MC would put up another crooked number in the seventh. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) drew a leadoff walk and sent to second when Iannuzzi walked as well. With two away, a single by senior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) drove in Duphorn. Fitzpatrick followed with a single that drove in Iannuzzi. A double by Hass brought home Selden to give the Yellow Jackets a 9-3 lead.
- The Captains got one run in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull within three. Senior Tyler Dunn (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) worked a perfect ninth to record his first save.
