ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) had three hits and three RBI in the nightcap after scoring the winning run in the opener as the No. 15 Randolph-Macon baseball team swept a doubleheader from Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The Wasps had runners on the corners with none out in the top of the first before senior Matt Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) rolled a double-play ball as W&H took an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets would get on the board in the third. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) drew a leadoff walk, setting a program record with 102 career walks. Duphorn moved to second on a base hit by sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby). Both runners were in scoring position with two away when senior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) doubled to center to give R-MC a 2-1 lead.
  • E&H would plate the equalizer with two away in the fifth, knotting the score at 2-2.
  • R-MC would take the lead in the eighth. Selden drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Mooney. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by junior JT Fitzpatrick (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee). Senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Sophomore Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) delivered a sacrifice fly to center to plate Selden with the go-ahead run.
  • Senior Tyler Dunn (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to record his third save.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • The Wasps would again take an early lead, plating a run in the top of the second. R-MC answered in the third, the first of five straight innings with multiple runs. Freshman Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a leadoff single in the third and moved to second on a walk to Duphorn. Both scored on a base hit by senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) to give the Yellow Jackets the lead. Nickles would come home on a triple by Selden as the home team led 3-1.
  • Bush had a squeeze bunt in the fourth to plate Fitzpatrick, and Iannuzzi's sacrifice fly brought home senior Jack Basse (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) as the lead grew to 5-1.
  • Mooney had an RBI double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bush in the fifth to make it 7-1.
  • In the sixth, Mooney had a RBI double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bush to give the Yellow Jackets a 9-1 advantage.
  • Selden had an RBI single in the seventh and sophomore Blake Doggett (Richmond, Va./Hanover) added a sacrifice fly as the lead ballooned to 11-1.
