HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley provided the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to score junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach with the winning run in thrilling walk-off fashion in the second game, and junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville had two RBIs in the first game, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to non-conference baseball doubleheader sweep of Southern Virginia University on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC earned the pitching win in the 4-3 nightcap for the host Tigers (11-9), while junior Trenton Tiller/Powhatan gained the mound triumph in the 5-1 opener against the visiting Knights (0-13).

In game two, H-SC scored four runs on seven hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first, two runs in the third and one run in the decisive eighth—the two games were pre-determined as seven-inning contests. SVU scored three runs on five hits with no errors … scoring one run in the third and two runs in the fifth.

In the first, senior captain Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (2-3) singled to left field with one out, stole second base and later scored on a two-out RBI triple to right field by Clawson (2-3, 2 RBIs). In the third, Lipscomb (1-3) and Clawson each reached base when hit by pitches, and both runners crossed the plate on separate wild pitches.

In the extra eighth, Lipscomb reached on an infield single to third base and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Muehleck. Karnes (0-3) was hit by a pitch, before Clawson provided his clutch run-scoring single to right field that allowed Lipscomb to score the game-ending and winning run.

Tappy (4-1) pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning for the victory, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks. Sophomore Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville started and pitched the first 4.0 innings, scattering two hits and one run, earned, with six strikeouts and four walks. Classmate Davis Ferguson/Rocky Mount tossed 1.0 inning, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Junior Jason Covaney/Williamsburg pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Ethan Snyder/Bumpass pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and one walk.

In game one, H-SC scored five runs on five hits with no errors … scoring one run in the second, one run in the third and three runs in the fifth. SVU scored one run on eight hits with two errors … scoring one run in the sixth.

In the second, sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria (0-1) walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Muehleck (0-2, RBI). In the third, sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (1-1) singled with two outs, stole second base and crossed the plate on an RBI single to center by Karnes (1-2, RBIs).

In the fifth, Lipscomb (1-4) singled to left center field and advanced to third base on a single through the right side by freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt (1-4)—crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field by Karnes. Burnette crossed the plate when Beavers reached base on a catcher's interference call with the bases loaded, and Boyce, who was hit by a pitch, scored courtesy of a bases-loaded walk drawn by Tappy (0-1, RBI).

Tiller started and pitched the first 4.0 scoreless innings, scattering four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Ryan Portes/Midlothian tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing no hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan pitched 1.0 inning, yielding two hit and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Classmate Russell Bowles/Moseley pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing two hits with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play on the road at ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday, April 13, beginning at 3 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
