VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Senior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C.Glass) went 1 for 4 with one run and two RBI as No. 17 Randolph-Macon baseball outscored Virginia Wesleyan 11-5 on Tuesday afternoon to remain in first place in the ODAC. 

The Basics

Records: R-MC 21-8, 17-3 ODAC; VWU 5-22, 5-15 ODAC

How It Happened:  

  • The Yellow Jackets would start the scoring in the top of the first. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) reached on an error, moved to second on a walk to sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) and went to third on an infield hit by senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge). Duphorn scored on a sacrifice fly by Selden, while Iannuzzi and Nickles both came home on wild pitches as R-MC took a 3-0 lead.
  • The Marlins would load the bases in the bottom of the first, but sophomore Cam Furman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) got a called third strike as VWU stranded three.
  • VWU would score a run in the third and added one in the fifth. The Marlins had the bases loaded and one away in the fifth when senior RJ Payne (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) came in from the bullpen for R-MC. He got a force-out at the plate and a groundout to keep the Yellow Jackets on top at 3-2.
  • After the Marlins tied it with a run in the sixth, R-MC answered in the top of the seventh. Senior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) reached on an error and scored on an error as the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead at 4-3. Senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) walked, stole second and came home on a base hit by Duphorn to give the visitors a 5-3 advantage. Freshman Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) walked and scored on a wild pitch as R-MC went up 6-3. Duphorn would score from second on a passed ball to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-3 lead.
  • R-MC added to its lead in the eighth. Selden singled and scored on a wild pitch, and Mooney walked and came home when Duphorn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as the Yellow Jackets went up 9-3.
  • VWU tallied two in the bottom of the eighth before R-MC finished the scoring in the ninth. Selden delivered another sacrifice fly and junior Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) added an RBI single as the Yellow Jackets posted an 11-5 victory.

By The Numbers 

  • Mike Nickles had two hits and a run.
  • Pietruszynski went 2 for 2 off the bench with one RBI.
  • Sophomore Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) went 1 for 1 with a triple and a run.
  • Senior Zack Radcliffe (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) earned the win, fanning two in 1.2 innings to raise his record to 2-2.
  • Senior Tyler Dunn (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) struck out three in the ninth to secure the win for the Yellow Jackets.
  • VWU left 15 runners on base.
