PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – The Lebanon Valley College baseball team scored a season-high 24 runs to defeat Ohio Wesleyan University 24-4 in game one of two on Friday for the Dutchmen at South County Regional Park. LVC fell to Heidelberg 18-3 in the second game of the day in Punta Gorda.
Game 1 vs. Ohio Wesleyan University
Lebanon Valley (5-4) put up multiple runs in every inning and had 11 different batters record at least one hit. The Dutchmen started off with a five-run first and then scored four in both the second and third innings to build a 13-0 lead. OWU (3-5) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third. Both teams scored three runs in the fourth before the Dutchmen tallied four runs in the fifth and two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Inside the Box Score
- Mike Bulgia started the scoring with an RBI double down the left-field line in the first and finished the day with four hits, coming just a triple shy of the cycle. He blasted a three-run home run in the fifth for his third career homer. The senior knocked in a career-high six runs and scored three times.
- Ethan O'Loughlin also had a huge day at the plate with a career-high four hits and three runs scored. The sophomore also knocked in a career-high five runs on two doubles and two singles.
- Max Kaplan batted leadoff and got on base four times while drawing three walks. He scored all four times he was on base and had three RBIs in the game.
- Justin Ranker had three hits in his first collegiate start and scored five times. Anthony Giancatrino and Eric Sees each had two hits.
- Kyle Kingsbury earned his first win of the year with four innings pitched. The senior struck out seven and allowed just one earned run on four hits and three walks.
- Sam Dozier pitched two hitless innings with two strikeouts. Blair Shaffer struck out the side in the seventh.
- Lebanon Valley set new season-highs in runs (24), hits (21), RBI (22), doubles (4), and walks (13).
- The 24 runs in a game and 20-run difference are the most for the Dutchmen since a 23-0 victory over Dominican (Ill.) on March 4, 2019. The last time the Dutchmen have scored at least 20 runs in a game was March 3, 2020, when they defeated Muskingum 21-9.
- This was the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Game 2 vs. Heidelberg
Heidelberg (5-4) took a 4-0 lead in the game with one run in the first and three in the third inning. The Dutchmen (5-5) fought back and scored three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead down to one. The Student Princes scored eight runs in the fourth to open up a 12-3 lead. They added a run in the seventh and five more in the ninth to set the final score.
Inside the Box Score
- Stossel scored the first run of the game for LVC before Bulgia knocked in two runs with a single through the left side in the third.
- Andrew Miles, Ryan Murphy, and Justin Porrino had hits for the Dutchmen.
- The Dutchmen used six pitchers in the game with Malachi Duka being the most effective. Duka pitched two innings of one-hit ball and struck out five. Tanner Rock had four strikeouts, Jeremy Tuz had three, Brandon Crews had two, and Brendan Landry had one.
- This was the second matchup between LVC and the Student Princes this week. The Dutchmen won 9-7 on Wednesday in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Who's Next
The Dutchmen will wrap up their spring break trip in Florida on Saturday morning with a tough opponent in NEWMAC power Babson College. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Port Charlotte on Field 9 at Centennial Park.
