Fifth-Inning Runs Push Cougars Past Griffins In Home Opener

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/16/2022) - Senior second baseman Rob Bailey (Abington, Pa.) and sophomore right fielder Barry Walker (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) gave Gwynedd Mercy University (3-8) a 2-1 lead over Misericordia University (8-6) after the first two inning's of this afternoon's home opener. The Cougars stole the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, 3-2, but the Griffins answered immediately as double steal from Bailey and senior left fielder Brett Swire (Boyertown, Pa.) and a double to right center from sophomore shortstop Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill, N.J.) gained them a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, Misericordia University won the later innings, changing places with Gwynedd Mercy University with a 3-1 fifth inning, 6-5, and adding an insurance run to their 7-5 victory a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.

Senior catcher T.J. Brasier (Levittown, Pa.) was the only Griffin with multiple hits (2-for-4) ; he doubled with two out in the bottom of the third inning and homered for the Griffins' fifth inning score. Swire (1-for-3, R, BB, RBI), Bailey (1-for-4, 2 R, RBI), Ebling (1-for-3, RBI), and Walker (1-for-3, RBI) accounted for the other four Gwynedd Mercy University hits. Freshman Ryan Bailey (Levittown, Pa.) offered a strong start (4.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3K), while junior Trey Livingstone (Pennsburg, Pa.) (2.2 IP, H, R, BB), freshman Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) (1.0 IP, H), and sophomore Mitchell Bramsway (Temecula, Calif.) (1.0 IP, H, 2 K) provided quality relief appearances.

Gwynedd Mercy University plays next on Saturday, March 19, when they visit Penn State University - York for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
