HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) had two hits and three RBIs, and junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) had three hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 14-1 non-conference baseball home win past the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Ethan Currin (Toano) and freshman Matthew Arnold (Danville) each added two hits and two RBIs, while freshman Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) earned the pitching win for the host Tigers (8-5) against the visiting Eagles (11-7).

H-SC scored 14 runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh. UMW scored one run on six hits with six errors … scoring the one run in the fifth inning.

Highlights for the Tigers included Beavers (2-3, 3 RBIs) with a two-run single to left field in the fourth, and a run-scoring double down the left field line in the seventh, along with Boyce (3-4, 2 RBIs) providing an RBI double to right center in the fifth and a run-scoring infield single in the seventh. Other top performances came from Currin (2-2, 2 RBIs) with an RBI double to right center in the fifth and a sacrifice fly RBI to right in the sixth, Arnold (2-4, 2 RBIs) with a sac fly RBI to center in the sixth and a run-scoring single to right in the seventh, freshman Jahiem Green (Stafford) (1-2, 2 RBIs) with a two-run single up the middle in the seventh, along with an RBI double to right in the fifth from freshman Johnny Oates II (Chester) (1-4, RBI).

Reynolds (1-1) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing only four hits and one run, earned, with five strikeouts and three walks for his first collegiate mound win. Freshman Lance Tate (Stanardsville), junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC), freshman Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) and junior Davis Ferguson (Rocky Mount) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief—Tate, Tappy and Ferguson each with a strikeout, while Gregory and Ferguson each yielded one hit—none of the four walked a batter.

H-SC will play again on Saturday, March 19, hosting Roanoke College for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium beginning at 12 p.m. A previously scheduled non-conference home game against Mary Baldwin University on March 17 has been re-scheduled (due to weather forecast) for next week on Tuesday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m. at Wurdeman Stadium.
