ANNVILLE, Pa. – Kyle Kingsbury became the Lebanon Valley College baseball's leader in career strikeouts and Max Kaplan scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to give the Dutchmen a thrilling 3-2 victory over Susquehanna University on Saturday in the team's first game of the year at McGill Field.
Kingsbury entered the game needing only five strikeouts to tie the record of 178 recorded by Steve Anspach between 1999 and 2002. He needed just two innings to reach that mark before ending the top of the third with his record-breaking 179th career strikeout.
The Dutchmen (6-5) took an early lead off the bat of Kaplan as the outfielder blasted a shot that just got over the wall in left-center on the second pitch he saw. The River Hawks (3-10) rallied for two runs in the eighth to take the lead. LVC fought right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game setting up the ninth-inning heroics.
