HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) had three hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning, and sophomore Tillman Butler (Culpeper) added two hits and two RBIs in the second game, while junior Ethan Currin (Toano) and freshman Johnny Oates II (Chester) each hit home runs in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader past Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) gained the pitching victory in relief in the thrilling 4-3 walk-off win in the nightcap, while freshman Lance Tate (Stanardsville) took the mound triumph in relief in the 9-5 opening-game win for the host Tigers (10-5, 4-2) against the visiting Maroons (8-9, 0-4).

In game one, H-SC scored nine runs on 10 hits with no errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, one run in the sixth, one run in the seventh and four runs in the decisive eighth. RC scored five runs on seven hits with three errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, and one run each in the second, third and sixth innings.

Highlights for the Tigers in the opener included Currin (1-4, 3 RBIs) hitting a three-run home run to left field in the first inning, and Oates (2-4, RBI) slamming a solo homer to left field in the sixth. It was the second home run of the season for Currin, and the team-leading third homer this spring by Oates. Butler (1-1, 2 RBIs) added a clutch pinch-hit, two-run single to right center field in the eighth that proved to be the game-winner, while freshman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (2-4, RBI) had a run-scoring single in the eighth. Senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) (2-3) and freshman Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (2-4) each contributed two hits to the victory.

Tate (2-0) tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the win, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach) started and pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and five runs, all earned, with a career-high nine strikeouts and two walks. Senior Kieran Conway (Chesapeake) pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored four runs on 10 hits with two errors … scoring three runs in the ninth inning to force the extra inning and the game-winning run in the decisive 10th. RC scored three runs on five hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth.

Highlights for the Tigers in the nightcap included the exciting and game-winning RBI single to left field by Karnes (3-5, RBI) with two outs in the 10th that scored junior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) (0-2), who had walked to open the at-bat. The ninth inning was just as exciting as the Garnet & Grey plated three runs to stay alive … getting a pair of clutch hits with two outs—an RBI single by Oates (2-2, RBI) followed by a two-run single from Butler (2-4, 2 RBIs). Junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (2-4) also had two hits in the contest.

Tappy (2-3) pitched the final 2.0 scoreless innings for the win, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Junior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) started and pitched the first 5.2 solid innings, scattering three hits and three runs, two earned, with a season-high eight strikeouts and no walks. Tate tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and no walks, and senior Trenton Tiller (Powhatan) tossing a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
