SALISBURY, Md. – The eighth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team dropped its second extra-inning game of the week, falling to the 16th-ranked Shenandoah Hornets, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Hornets broke the ice in the top of the second inning. Ryan Clawson singled with one out, then Sam Horn bashed a triple to right to get Clawson home. Horn scored on a Haden Madagan RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
• The Sea Gulls responded and took the lead in the bottom of the second. Sky Rahill and Dom Frigiola led off with back-to-back singles, then after a flyout and a strikeout, Zach Geesaman dropped a base hit into center. Rahill scored easily, and Frigiola came around on a wild throw in from center to tie it at 2-2.
• Kavi Caster came up next and legged out an infield hit that the second baseman threw away, allowing Geesaman to score and give Salisbury a 3-2 lead.
• The lead was short-lived, though, as Shenandoah had an answer in the third. Kooper Anderson reached first on a dropped third strike and stole second base, then Henry Delavergne doubled him home to tie the game at 3-3.
• Salisbury went back in front in the fourth. Scott Cameron led off with a single and took second on a sac bunt. Geesaman came up next and lined another base knock into center, bringing Cameron home to make it 4-3.
• The Hornets got that run back in the fifth. Anderson singled to lead off, then Delavergne took his place on a fielder's choice and stole second. Paul Bucher muscled a single into center to plate Delavergne and knot it up at 4-4.
• Both teams dug into their trenches from there with neither side breaking through the end of regulation. Jimmy Adkins shut down the Hornets 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, while Mike Verzaleno did the same to the Sea Gulls in the bottom of the ninth to force extras.
• Shenandoah finally forced Salisbury to blink in the top of the 15th. After making a spectacular snag on a line drive at first to end the 14th, Bucher led off the 15th with a double. Kyle Lisa came up next and hit a grounder to second, but Trent Saunders' throw to third to try and get Bucher sailed wide of the mark, and Bucher came in with the go-ahead run while Lisa advanced to second.
• After a couple groundouts, Madagan got Lisa home with a single to left, giving the Hornets a 6-4 lead they would put in the books at the end of the 15th.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

• Zach Geesaman sparked the Sea Gull lineup from the bottom of the order, going 2-for-6 with a run and two RBIs.
• Sky Rahill went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Cameron Hyder finished 3-for-5 with a double for Salisbury's only extra-base hit.
• Jimmy Adkins (0-1) suffered the hard-luck loss despite tossing a seven-inning gem out of the bullpen. Adkins gave up two unearned runs on four hits while walking none and striking out a career-high 10 batters on 92 pitches.
• Mitchell Wittkamp made the start for the Sea Gulls and lasted 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts on 46 pitches.
• Brandon Epstein, Justin McDermott and Corey Burton combined for 5.1 innings of one-run relief to provide an effective bridge from Wittkamp to Adkins.
• Salisbury is now 0-3 in extra-inning games this season. The Sea Gulls lost to Cortland in 10 innings on Feb. 20 and fell to Penn State Abington in 12 innings on Tuesday.

SHENANDOAH GAME NOTES

• Pearce Bucher finished 2-for-6 with a double, RBI and the go-ahead run in the 15th inning.
• Henry Delavergne went 2-for-7 with a double, run and RBI, while Sam Horn batted 2-for-5 with a triple, RBI and run scored.
• Haden Madagan drove in two runs and made several impressive catches in left field.
• Kyle Lisa (1-0) shifted from second base to the mound in extras and earned the win, tossing four no-hit innings with two punchouts.
• Matt House earned his seventh save of the year by shutting down the Sea Gulls in the 15th, giving up his only baserunner on an error.
• Jacob Bell pitched two innings before injuring himself while warming up for the third. Bell allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts on 37 pitches.
• Mike Verzaleno went well over 100 pitches out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on five hits in eight relief innings.

• The Sea Gulls will host in-state rivals Washington College on Wednesday afternoon.
