Abington Baseball Downs St. Mary's In Series Opener

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – Penn State Abington opened its three-game, United East Conference series at St. Mary's College of Maryland with a 13-9 triumph on Friday.

The win improved the Nittany Lions to 10-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference while the Seahawks fell to 5-5 and 1-3. The two will complete the series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.

The bats came alive for Penn State Abington as the team notched 10 hits and took advantage of four St. Mary's errors. Zach Morales opened the scoring in the second as he led off the stanza with a home run while another tally scored on a double play for an early 2-0 lead.

The Seahawks tied it in their half of the inning, but Morales was at it again in the third, this time connecting for an RBI double. After St. Mary's tied it again, the Nittany Lions took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth and added seven more over the next three innings for a 12-7 lead. They added one more in the eighth for a 13-7 lead and eventually a 13-9 final.

Morales finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs while Sean Doherty was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Ryan McCarty had another multiple-hit game and Tim Petrucelli scored three times.
