#1 Marietta extends winning streak to 11 games with sweep at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — No. 1 ranked Marietta College extended its winning streak to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep of Muskingum University Tuesday (April 12) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game, 19-8, and then took the nitecap by the score of 10-8.
 
The Etta Express improves to 25-2 overall and 7-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Muskingum falls to 11-13 on the season and 1-7 in conference games.
 
Senior Damian Yenzi led Marietta's 24-hit attack in game one. The Pioneer third baseman went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and six runs batted in. Turner Hill, Logan Vietmeier, Drew Holderbach and Matthew Busby each had three hits in the game for the Etta Express.
 
Marietta scored 11 runs in the first three innings to put the game away early. Yenzi smack a one-out solo home run in the first inning to get things rolling. The Pioneers added a second run in the inning when Zach Boyd stole home on a first and third double steal.
 
Yenzi lined an RBI single to left center in the second inning and then added a two-run double in the third. Marietta blew the game open with eight runs in the third inning sending 12 batters to the plate.
 
Alex Richter had a two-run single up the middle, while Hill, Vietmeier and Holderbach each drive in runs with hits in the eight-run rally.
 
While the offense was piling up the runs, Gino Sabatine (4-1) was having a quality start on the mound. Sabatine worked six innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits. He walked one and struck out three. Dawson Pierce, Griffin Malick and Sam Mathews all threw in relief for Marietta.
 
Marietta added a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and then scored five more in the ninth. Yenzi knocked in a run with a single in the sixth and another on a double in the ninth.
 
Jaxon Rinkes (2-3) started and took the loss for Muskingum. He threw four innings and gave up 11 runs on 13 hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Austin Lippolis and Drew Eaches threw in relief for the Muskies.
 
The Pioneers grabbed an early lead in game two. Holderbach doubled to left center scoring Vietmeier, who reached on a two-out double. Brett Carson knocked on Holderbach with a single in the hole at shortstop and Trent Castle made it 3-0 with a single that scored Carson.
 
Muskingum got one run back in the second and then tied the game in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Dominic Gorence.
 
Marietta took advantage of three Muskie errors to regain the lead with six runs in the top of the seventh. Vietmeier plated a run with an RBI single and Ben kaplin capped the rally with a two-run double.
 
Gorence cut the Pioneer lead in half with a three-run shot in the bottom of the inning. Muskingum added two more runs in the eighth inning. Peyton Carr reached on an infield single followed by a Tyler Arter double. Quinten Colins plated both runners with a single up the middle.
 
Richter drove in an insurance run for the Pioneers with a double to the right center gap. Carson led off with a double and then scored on Richter's two-bagger.
 
Zach Marzetz started on the mound for the Pioneers and threw 4.2 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits. Isaac Danford (2-1) got the win with 1.1 innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Sam Mathews notched his eighth save despite allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in three innings pitched.
 
Noah Moser (2-2) took the loss. He started and worked six innings giving up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Clark Jennings and Liam Carey each threw in relief.
 
Carson and Kaplin both finished 3-for-5 with two doubles. Hill and Vietmeier had two hits apiece.
 
Marietta hosts Heidelberg University on Friday (April 15) for an OAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
