WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team swept Geneva College in a doubleheader Friday at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents topped the Golden Tornadoes in the first game by a score of 15-6 in game one while
The sweep stretches W&J's winning streak to 14 games overall. The Presidents remain unbeaten in PAC play, as they are now 13-0. W&J is 20-6 overall. Geneva falls to 4-9 in PAC play and 8-18 overall.
Game 1 - W&J 15, Geneva 6
After a scoreless first inning, W&J recorded eight runs in the second inning to create an insurmountable lead. All eight runs were unearned as three fielding errors in the inning was the undoing for the GTs. Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio/Wellington School) stroked a one-out double and scored when Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) drew a bases loaded walk.
Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford), and Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.VA./The Linsly School) all recorded RBI singles in the frame. Gregovits connected on a RBI single while Horvat and Rush followed with two-run singles. Zaas would later return to the plate and drive home Peter Kalinski(Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) with his second hit of the inning.
W&J added two more runs in the third inning before plating four runs in the fifth. Logan Schieder (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) launched a ball to left center to record a two-RBI double before eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) singled home Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Fairport Harding) to stretch the lead to 14-2. A sacrifice fly by Alec Jackson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) in the bottom of the sixth inning would plate W&J's final run in the opener.
Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) won his fourth straight start, as he struck out five and issued just one walk in six innings. Johnny Nixon (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) recorded the final three outs in order.
Horvat and Zaas would record multi-hit games for the Red & Black.
Game 2 - W&J 20, Geneva 1
Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) tossed six strong innings to pick up the victory in game two. Fox allowed just one on three hits. He struck out two and walked none.
Fox didn't need much run support but the Presidents' bats provided it anyway. Horvat led off with a single and stole second to get into scoring position. Horvat then broke to steal third and scored as the ball got away on a wild pitch. The Horvat run gave W&J a 1-0 lead after the first.
W&J opened the game up with seven runs in the bottom of the second. LaDuca stroked a one-out solo home run to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Horvat lined an RBI double and Rush followed with a two-run single to make it 4-0. Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) added an RBI double of his own in the frame. Samson stretched the lead to 7-0 with a two-run double that scored Sante and Zaas.
The Presidents added three more runs on five hits in the fourth. Lehner, Beistel and Horvat all collected RBI hits in the inning. Samson smashed a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the W&J lead to 12-1.
Tony Tamilia (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon), Knox Meier (Tampla, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) recorded RBI hits in the sixth inning as W&J posted four more runs. The Presidents added three more runs in the seventh, as a RBI single by Jonathan Haines (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) highlighted the inning.
W&J's final run came in the eighth inning when John Klein (Vienna, Va./Madison) singled home Connor Helm(Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), who doubled to lead off the inning.
The Presidents posted season highs in runs (20) and hits (23) in game two. Horvat and Beistel paced W&J with three hits apiece. Samson added two hits and a team-high four RBI while LaDuca finished with a pair of hits as well.
Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla./Out-of-Door Academy), Ryan Rametta (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area) and Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) eached tossed a scoreless inning of relief out of the pen.
W&J will look to complete the season series sweep tomorrow (April 16) at Ross Memorial. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
