ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh in the opener and sophomore Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) had four hits and six RBI in the nightcap as the Randolph-Macon baseball team swept an ODAC doubleheader from Roanoke on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game 1:

  • The Maroons scored three in the first and one in the third before the Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fifth. Junior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) had a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lubsen to make it 4-1.
  • The R-MC offense exploded in the seventh. Senior Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) stretch a hit into right center into a double. He took third as the throw from the outfield got away and scored on an errant throw to third as the score went to 4-2. Johnson and freshman Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) had back-to-back singles before Lubsen launched a long homer to left, his second of the season, to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 edge. With two away, junior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) reached on an error and sophomore Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) crushed a long homer to right, his seventh, to give R-MC a 7-4 advantage.
  • Roanoke added a run in the eighth, but sophomore Cole Snead (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) worked a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to record his second save.

By The Numbers

  • Lubsen finished with four RBI.
  • Cole had two hits and two RBI.
  • Johnson went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs.
  • Junior Cam Furman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) pitched three scoreless innings in relief with three hits, no walks and three strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Wyatt Stanley (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) earned the win, going 2.0 innings with two hits, one run and one strikeout to raise his record to 2-1.

How It Happened – Game 2:

  • After RC plated one in the top of the first, R-MC responded in the bottom of the frame. Myers had a leadoff single and was erased at second on a fielder's choice by Iannuzzi. An errant throw to first moved Iannuzzi to second. Iannuzzi went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to level the score at 1-1.
  • The Maroons tallied a run in the top of the second before the Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the second. Pietruszynski drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a two-out base hit by junior Logan Smith (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian). Following a walk to sophomore Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello), Myers doubled down the left field line to drive in Pietruszynski and Smith, giving R-MC a 3-2 edge.
  • RC put up five in the top of the third and R-MC answered in the bottom of the third. Cole had a leadoff single, moved to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pietruszynski as the Yellow Jackets trailed 7-4.
  • The Maroons added three in the sixth to go up 10-4 before the Yellow Jackets put together their comeback. In the bottom of the sixth, Bush had a one out single and went to second on an error. A base hit by Myers plated Bush, and Myers scored on a single by Cole as R-MC pulled within four at 10-6.
  • RC tallied one run in the seventh to go up 11-6. In the bottom of the inning, Pietruszynski had a leadoff single, while Johnson and Smith walked to load the bases with one away. Bush walked to bring home Pietruszynski, and Myers cleared the bases with a double as the Yellow Jackets pulled within one at 11-10.
  • Freshman Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for R-MC. In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) belted a one-out homer to left to tie the game at 11-11. Pietruszynski doubled and scored on a single by Johnson to give the Yellow Jackets a 12-11 edge. Lautenschlager walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Smith delivered a two-run single to put the home team on top 14-11.
  • Sophomore Cole Stamm (Irvington, Va./Middlesex) pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout to record his second save of the week and of the season.

  • R-MC took over sole possession of second place in the ODAC with a 9-4 mark.
  • Myers went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a walk, one run and six RBI. He also had seven putouts in center field.
  • Smith went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI.
  • Bush was 2 for 3 with two walks, two runs and one RBI.
  • Pietruszynski went 2 for 3 with a walk, three runs and one RBI.
