WINCHESTER, Va. -- Sophomore Lucas Burnette (Hurt) had one RBI, and junior Ethan Currin (Toano) added two hits, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 4-1 baseball decision on the road at nationally-ranked Shenandoah University on Monday afternoon in Winchester. It was game two of the Best-of-Three Quarterfinal series in the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament—both won by the Hornets. Senior Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach) took the mound setback for the visiting Tigers. H-SC completes the season with a final record of 20-19 overall, while SU advances in the tournament with a record of 31-10-1.

H-SC scored one run on seven hits with one error … scoring the lone run in the ninth inning. SU, No. 28 in the most recent Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Division III Poll, scored four runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the first inning and one run each in the second and third.

In the ninth, Currin (2-4) singled down the right field line with one out and was pinch-run for by sophomore Trent Jones (Virginia Beach). Senior captain Max Lipscomb (Virginia Beach) (1-1) followed with a pinch-hit single up the middle to advance Jones to second base. Burnette (1-1, RBI) pinch-hit, as well, and singled through the right side to score Jones.

Graziano (2-4) started and pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) tossed the final 6.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC finishes with its first 20-win season, and the most wins in a season, since 2017 (21-19). The Tigers could return as many as 33 lettermen for the 2023 campaign.
