NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In a top-25 showdown at Captains Park, the No. 23 Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets (6-0) downed No. 18 Christopher Newport, 6-0.

Jay Cassady (1-1) struck out nine batters over 5.0 innings of work for the Captains, allowing two runs on five hits. Offensively, Zach Dzarnowski reached base twice with a walk and a double to left center to lead the way for the CNU offense.

The Captains struggled to get things going against R-MC starter Cam Furman (2-0), who scattered three hits over 6.0 innings pitched. Ethan Weaver singled to lead off the third inning and Josh Reinhold added a single into right later in the inning, but both runners were stranded in the Captains' best chance to score during the game.

Sam Benedict added a lead-off double in the sixth, but Furman managed to keep him from scoring with a pair of groundball outs and a strikeout. Dzarnowski's productive at-bats acme in the seventh and eighth off the Yellow Jackets bullpen as he walked after a Scott Crosson single in the seventh and then tried to keep the game alive for CNU with a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth.

Unfortunately for the Captains, the timely hitting that has carried the team to 10 wins in the first 12 games was not there against Randolph-Macon on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets methodically built their lead with single runs in six different games including one off each of CNU's four relievers in the game.

Christopher Newport will travel to Fayetteville, N.C. for three games this weekend on the road. First, the Captains will face the Cougars of Averett University at Noon on Friday, March 3. CNU will also face the host Methodist Monarchs at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Immaculata University at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.
