PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Shane Stossel struck out 11 hitters in six innings of work and knocked in two runs and combined with Malachi Duka to give the Lebanon Valley baseball team a 3-0 victory in a combined no-hitter over Heidelberg College in the first game of the team's spring break trip to Port Charlotte on Monday. LVC dropped a 15-4 decision to Misericordia University in the second game of the day.
Game 1 vs. Heidelberg
Stossel got the Dutchmen on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a double to right center to score Nico Santoro and Jace Fetterman. Santoro got on with a double while Fetterman walked. Neither team was able to amass any offense until the sixth. Andrew Miles was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a Logan Brewer walk, advanced to third on a throwing error on a pickoff, and then scored on a wild pitch. Malachi Duka relieved Stossel on the mound in the seventh and finished off the no-hit bid with three strong innings of work.
Inside the Box Score
- Stossel threw 90 pitches and struck out 11 hitters. He was one shy of his school record for strikeouts in a game. The junior also had a two-RBI double.
- Duka struck out two while facing 11 batters. He earned his first career save.
- Santoro had a double in the game while Jace Fetterman and Ryan Murphy had singles.
- Peter Botbyl and Fetterman drew two walks each.
Game 2 vs. Misericordia
The Cougars manufactured a run in the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to center. LVC struck back in the bottom of the inning as Ryan Murphy knocked in Santoro with a single to the gap in right center. Misericordia added a run in the third, scoring on a wild pitch. The Cougars used a five-run fourth to take a 7-1 lead.
The Dutchmen fought back as Fetterman crushed his second home run of the year to right center in the fifth. Dave Mangold and Santoro had a pair of RBI singles in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-4. Misericordia responded with three runs in the seventh, two in the eighth, and three more in the ninth to set the final score.
Inside the Box Score
- Mangold was 3-3 at the plate with an RBI. It is the second three-hit game of his career.
- Fetterman had two hits including his home run. He also walked twice.
- Santoro also had two hits to extend his hitting streak to six games.
- Conor Smith and Murphy added a hit each for the Dutchmen.
