THREE IN A ROW! NJCU Makes it 51 Runs over 27 Innings for Third Straight Victory

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University baseball team exploded for 17 runs and another victory on Tuesday, March 7, in the blistering wins at Caven Point Field, defeating Moravian University, 17-9. NJCU has now scored 17 runs in each of its last three games and have strung together three victories, for what Major League's Lou Brown would call "a winning streak."

A tough start to the top of the first saw the Greyhounds (5-6) go up 4-0, however senior knuckleballer Paul Tannucilli (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) came in with no outs to eventually stop the bleeding for NJCU (3-1). He eventually threw 4.0 innings and allowed three runs with four strikeouts for his second victory of the season — he's now 2-1 on the year. Both teams proceeded to go scoreless for the next two half innings before the Gothic Knights scratched one across in the bottom of the second via a one-out RBI groundout from sophomore outfielder John Abrahamsen (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) — sophomore Catcher Nick Vaughn (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) had led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third via a balk before Abrahamsen plated him.

The third started off with Moravian scoring two more in the top half to go up 6-1 and things looked to be going the wrong way for NJCU. That did not last long, however, as the Gothic Knights blew up for six runs in the inning to take the lead — all via a two-out rally. Senior outfielder Josh Hernandez (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community) started with a walk before stealing second. Senior designated hitter Jimmy Vizzoni (Hamilton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) followed with a walk of his own before graduate student centerfielder Ricky Voss (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) hit a one-run single to the gap in left to score Hernandez. Voss and Vizzoni followed with a double steal to put two in scoring position for Vaughn, who delivered with a two-run single — again to the gap in left — to make it 6-3.

Vaughn then stole second before rookie third baseman Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) walked. Abrahamsen then hit a single to right to plate Vaughn and make it 6-4. Once again, Abrahamsen stole second to put himself in scoring position, along with Yarson, before junior second baseman Ali Pompey (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) brought them home with a two-run single to right, forcing the second pitching change of the day for the Greyhounds. Pompey then immediately stole second before junior first baseman Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech) drew a walk. Rookie shortstop Arian Lunar (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) closed out the offense with a run-scoring single up the middle to take the lead. NJCU stole six bases that inning and finished with 10 for the game — one off the program record of 11 set back on April 24, 2019 against Cairn University.

Moravian got one back in the top half to tie it up at 7-7, but NJCU's offense was not done yet and the Gothic Knights put up an eight-spot on the board to make it 16-7 and blow the game wide open. Voss started with a single before stealing second. Vaughn then hit a single to put runners on the corners before an attempted double steal did not work out and Voss was picked off on his way to home. Then, with Yarson on first via an error and Vaughn on third, Abrahamsen singled home the first run of the inning to make it 8-7 before Pompey walked to load the bases.

Another pitching change was followed by Allo reaching on a fielder's choice, however an errant throw from short resulted in two more runs coming across. Lunar continued the rally with a run-scoring single to plate Pompey before Hernandez cleared the bases with his lone hit of the afternoon, a two-run double to left. Vizzoni immediately followed with a one-run single to center before stealing second. Voss closed out the offensive with a triple that rolled all the way to the fence as Vizzoni scored.

Senior righthander Justin Wiltsey (Hamilton Township, N.J./Hamilton West) came in as a reliever in the top of the fifth and proceeded to shut down the Greyhounds, allowing just one earned run over 5.0 innings for the save — his first of the season and second of his career. He also struck out six batters and was utterly dominant as temperatures began to drop.

Highlights:
- Hernandez scored three times and had two RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. Vizzoni also stole two, going 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs and a RBI.
- Voss and Vaughn each went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Voss scored once and had a triple, while Vaughn scored three times.
- Yarson was 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs, while Abrahamsen was 2-for-5 with three RBI, a stolen base and a pair of runs.
