The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 13, Johnson and Wales 10
Site/Venue: Ashland, Va./Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park
Records: R-MC 9-0, JWU 0-3
How It Happened
- After the Wildcats stranded a pair in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets lit the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Junior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a one-out single and scored on a base hit by Cole to make it 1-0. Cole came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 edge.
- After JWU put up five in the top of the second, RMC answered with a crooked number in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) had consecutive singles and junior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) walked to load the bases with one away. Senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) delivered a two-run single to pull the Yellow Jackets within one at 5-4. A triple by Cole plated two more to put RMC on top for good at 6-5. Cole scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) knocked in Lubsen to make it 8-5.
- The Wildcats got one back in the third before Bush walked and scored on a groundout by Webb, and Iannuzzi doubled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Cole, his four RBI of the game, as the Yellow Jackets led 10-6.
- After JWU added another run in the fourth, RMC got it back in the fifth. Cole had a single, went to third on a base hit by Lubsen and came home on a sacrifice fly by Harvey to make it 11-7.
- The Wildcats put up three in the sixth to pull within one at 11-10. Bush led off the bottom of the sixth with his first collegiate homer for a 12-10 advantage. Harvey led off the eighth with a single and scored on an error to expand the lead to 13-10.
- Junior Cole Snead (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) pitched the seventh and eighth for the Yellow Jackets, allowing one hit in two scoreless frames with two strikeouts to pick up the win, his first of the season.
