Yeomen Upend Spartans

More news about: Oberlin

Oberlin, Ohio - Ty Weatherspoon twirled eight strong innings and the Yeomen offense did just enough to lift the Oberlin College baseball team to a 4-3 win over the visiting Case Western Reserve University Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at Dill Field.

Weatherspoon (2-0) was masterful in notching his second win of the season as he scattered six hits and five walks over 107 pitches of work. The right-hander from Amherst, Ohio, struckout two, inducing 14 fly ball outs and seven ground ball outs along the way as just two of the three runs he was tagged with were earned.

Oberlin would score three runs with two outs in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. An infield single from Jake Blozy got things rolling and two batters later senior Max Anastasio pelted a single into left center to plate Blozy. The Yeomen would then take advantage of some shoddy defense by the Spartans as they committed two throwing errors on the same first-and-third double steal play by that allowed both Yianni Gardner and Anastasio to score.

With the three-run advantage in hand, Weatherspoon would sit the Spartans down in order in the fourth and fifth innings, but things would unravel a bit for the sophomore in the sixth. The first five hitters in the inning all reached base with two runs coming across during that stretch. Matt Trout's sacrifice fly would eventually tie, but Weatherspoon was able to bear down to retire the last two hitters, leaving two runners stranded and the game level at 3-3.

Weatherspoon bounced back with another strong inning in the seventh, working around a one-out single and then after walking the lead off man in the eighth, he induced a double play ball before striking out Nick Talarico looking to end his outing.

The Yeomen offense would reward his efforts, putting him in line for the win by plating the go-ahead run in the home-half of the eighth. Gardner started the inning with a single and another Case miscue on a sac bunt attempt put runners on the corners with nobody out against Spartans ace Reece Marley, who came on in relief for the first time this year. Jacob Thompson would then follow with a sac fly to deep center, allowing Gardner to trot home for the lead.

Oberlin continued to battle Marley but he was eventually able to wiggle his way out of the inning with no further damage, leaving the bases loaded.

Oberlin head coach Johnathan Ray would then turn to his ace - Vince Dolcemaschio - to try and lock down his first-career save in what was just his second-career relief appearance. The Los Angeles, California, native retired the first two hitters he faced before allowing a single but he would get Jasiah Harris to hit a lazy fly ball to center to end the game.

The Yeomen had just six hits in the contest with Anastasio leading the way with two.

The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Spartans with the previous Yeomen win coming nearly 10 years ago to the day on April 17, 2013 in the form of a 5-2 Oberlin triumph.

The win ran Oberlin's record to 9-10 while Case Western Reserve fell to 14-12.

The Yeomen are right back in action tomorrow afternoon at Otterbein University. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
