Meyer Complete-Game Leads MIT to Road Doubleheader Split at Babson

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (11-16, 6-7 NEWMAC); Babson College (20-12, 9-4 NEWMAC)

- Scores: Game One: Babson College 5, MIT 2; Game Two: MIT 5, Babson College 3

- The Lead: Led by a game two, complete-game by junior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.), the MIT baseball team earned a road split with Babson College on Saturday afternoon in a pair of NEWMAC divisional games. Babson took game one in a 5-2 final, while the Engineers took the second game by a 5-3 margin.

Game One
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the first, junior Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) singled with one out, followed by a double to right center by senior Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) to give MIT two runners in scoring position with one out. Senior Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) made the Beavers pay as his single to right center scored both and the Engineers led 2-0. 

- The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when Brant Savage led off the frame with a solo homer to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Sophomore Ethan Siegel (Austin, Texas) came on to pitch in the top of the fourth and kept the Beavers off the scoreboard in the fourth, fifth and sixth before Babson put up a pair in the bottom of the seventh. Jack Pirkl led off with a single through the left side and eventually scored on an RBI groundout to tie the game at 2-2. The Beavers took the lead for good on a single to right by Chris Basile that scored Tanner Santos for the 3-2 edge.

- Babson added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth that accounted for the 5-2 final margin.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Cartwright continued his hot streak at the plate as he was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kyle Sonandres and junior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) also finished with two hits each as the Engineers outhit Babson by a 12-9 margin.

- For Babson, Santos, Basile and Ryan Noone all had two hits apiece.

- Siegel took the loss for MIT and is now 1-1 overall as he allowed three runs on three hits with four strikeouts over 3.2 innings pitched. Anthony St. John picked up the win for the Beavers to move to 5-1 overall as he scattered 12 hits with two runs allowed and five strikeouts.

Game Two
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Junior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) put the Engineers up 1-0 in the first with a solo shot for his third home run of the season. MIT added to the lead in the top of the third behind four hits in the inning as Godfrey scored on an RBI single to left by Cartwright for the 2-0 edge.

- The Engineers extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth as Kyle Sonandres laced a two-RBI single to right center to score Schoenfeld and Godfrey. Babson eventually broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Savage scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Basile that cut the lead to 4-1.

- In an action-filled ninth, Schoenfeld drove in sophomore Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) with an RBI single through the left side, followed by a pair of Babson runs on a single to center by Savage that wrapped up the scoring and the doubleheader split.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Schoenfeld was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI to go along with two hits each by Godfrey, Kyle Sonandres, Cartwright and Tubbs. Savage and Ike Kiely led Babson with two hits each as MIT outhit the Beavers again by a 12-6 total. 

- Meyer picked up the win for MIT to improve to 4-2 as he scattered six hits with three runs scored over nine innings with six strikeouts and no walks. This marked his second complete-game NEWMAC road win of the week.

- Connor Doan was the losing pitcher for Babson as he is now 1-2 after allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over 4.1 innings pitched.
