Cole Reaches Base Eight Times for #10 RMC Baseball at RC

SALEM, Va. – Senior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) reached base safely eight times in 10 plate appearances with two doubles, two home runs and four walks as the 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team was swept in an ODAC doubleheader at Roanoke on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The Maroons scored once in the bottom of the first before the Yellow Jackets responded in the top of the second. Freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) had a leadoff single and sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) doubled to drive in Schmitt and tie the game at 1-1.
  • RC erupted for seven in the second before RMC put up a crooked number in the third. Junior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) started the rally with a single and scored on a homer by Cole, his 10th of the season. Junior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) had consecutive singles and both scored on a double by Lautenschlager to make it 8-5. Lautenschlager came home when sophomore Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) hit into a fielder's choice to make it a two-run game at 8-6. The Maroons added two in the third and neither team scored over the final six innings, making the final 10-6.
  • Senior Devin Miles (Moseley, Va./Cosby) tossed four scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts.
  • Freshman Colin Casey (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) pitched a hitless eighth with one punchout.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • Cole gave the Yellow Jackets an early lead with a leadoff homer in the first, his team-leading 11th.
  • The Maroons scored one in the second, nine in the third and five in the fourth before RMC got back on the board in the seventh. Cole doubled, stole third and scored on a groundout by sophomore Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes).

  • Cole went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a homer, two walks and two runs. He extended his on-base streak to 16 games.
  • Senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) was hit by a pitch in the opener and had a single in the nightcap to extend his on-base streak to 23 games.
  • Schmitt had two hits in Game 1 and walked in Game 2 to extend his on-base streak to 2- games.
  • Iannuzzi had a hit in Game 1 and walked in Game 2 to extend his on-base streak to 14 games.
