Case Western Reserve University junior third baseman Zack Carinci hit safely in his 29th-straight game to set a new program record for consecutive games with a hit, as the Spartans rolled to a 15-5 win against the University of Mount Union at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland on Sunday.
Carinci broke the previous record of 28-straight games with a hit set by former Spartans Sam Alexander during the 2011 campaign with a single in the fifth inning. He finished the game one-for-three with two runs, a RBI, and a pair of walks.
The Spartans scored their 15 runs on 21 hits, marking the 10th time in their last 11 games that the team has scored 10 or more runs in a game. The win was the 12th-straight victory for the Spartans and the team's 16th win in its last 17 contests, as CWRU improved to 26-12 overall. Mount Union dropped to 21-14 with the loss.
The Spartans fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first, but CWRU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The first four Spartan hitters all reached base, including an RBI single for sophomore outfielder Nick Harms. With the bases loaded, senior outfielder Trey Haley hit a sacrifice fly to score first year second baseman Jasiah Harris and give the Spartans the lead, and an RBI groundout by junior designated hitter Connor Stephenson put the Spartans in front 3-1.
Mount Union responded with three runs of their own in the top of the second, but CWRU tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Carinci. The Spartans went on to score four runs in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring single by Stephenson, RBI doubles off the bats of senior shortstop Owen Levinson and senior catcher Jack Anderson, and a sacrifice fly by Harris that allowed Levinson to score from third, putting the Spartans ahead 8-4.
The teams continued to trade runs with Mount Union scoring one in the top of the fourth and the Spartans adding a run back on a leadoff double by Harms and an RBI single from Haley to set the score at 9-5. CWRU went on to score three more in the bottom of the fifth, including a pair on a single by Harris, and then added another run in the sixth on sophomore outfielder Logan Andreyko's first home run of the campaign. CWRU capped off the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with an Anderson two-run single.
Sophomore Jackson Brewer made the first start of his career on Sunday and went the first three and a third innings, before giving way to the bullpen, which combined for five and two-thirds innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball. Junior Patrick O'Connor followed Brewer by allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout over the next two-and two-thirds innings, and junior Andrew Allen pitched a scoreless frame with a strikeout and a hit. Senior Jonathan Simon recorded a pair of outs, and junior Tyler Horvath notched the final four outs of the game without allowing a hit.
O'Connor earned the win in the contest, improving to 4-1 for the season.
Anderson recorded his second five-hit game of the season, going five-for-five with three runs, three RBIs, and a double, and has now hit safely in nine-straight games. Harris extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-for-three effort with three RBIs, and Haley increased his hitting streak to 12 games by going three-for-four with a run, a double, and three RBIs. Senior first baseman Nick Talarico also maintained his double-digit hit streak, going one-for-four to stretch the streak to 11 contests.
Andreyko finished a triple shy of the cycle in the game, going three-for-four with four runs, an RBI, and a walk, and Harms added a three-for-six day with a double, a run, and an RBI.
Mount Union starter Jaylen Leedy suffered the loss in his first start of the year to fall to 0-1 on the season.
The Spartans are scheduled to wrap up their 2023 regular season in one week, hosting DePauw University at 12:00 p.m. at Nobby's Ballpark. CWRU will recognize its graduating players with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony prior to the start of the game.
