Allegheny Baseball Explodes for Two Big Wins Over Thiel at Home

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team extended its win streak to seven after completing its third doubleheader sweep in a row, taking down the Thiel College Tomcats with ease in back-to-back mercy rule affairs.

The Gators (19-13, 12-4 PAC) took the early contest, 17-3, and defeated the Tomcats (11-23, 5-11 PAC) in the nightcap, 12-1, with both meetings being decided in seven innings.

Allegheny came out of the gates with steam, scoring all 17 runs within the first four innings. The Gators posted three apiece in the first and second innings, seven in the third, and another four in the fourth.

Every member of the starting nine tallied a hit in Game 1, and four Gators registered multi-hit games. Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) had a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs in the third and fourth innings. Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manel (Texas)) continued to bring his offensive explosiveness tallying an RBI in the second frame while finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored.

Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, marking his eighth hit in the last two games while earning 11 ribbies in that span.

Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) was a perfect 3-for-3 to begin the afternoon, driving in a run in the third inning and scoring three times. Fellow middle infielder Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) also had four RBIs.

Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/ Canfield) had a twilight day on the bump, as the southpaw starter threw 6.0 innings. He gave up only four hits and no runs while picking up his fifth win of the 2023 campaign. In only half of his innings, Herrmann needed double-digit pitches, with the most being 17. He finished the day with four punchouts and no walks. Dylan Fanelli (Berkley, Calif./ California High) came out of the pen in the seventh to emphatically slam the door on the Tomcats in the opener.

The Gators kept their foot on the gas in Game 2 and piled on another 15 hits to bring their total to 30 on the day. Allegheny scored once in the first, second, and fifth innings and then lit up the scoreboard with a five-spot in the third and four more in the sixth.

Dougherty went 3-for-5, extending his hit streak to nine while adding two RBIs to his resume. Both Nolin and Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the late game. Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River), who was behind the dish in both games for the Gators, went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the late contest.

Chodkowski also added to his stat line, getting three more hits and three more RBIs to finish the twibill 6-for-7 from the left side.

Mark Schweickert (Greg Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) threw the Gators' first complete game of the season, going 7.0 innings with just one run allowed on four hits. The crafty weekday starter blew fastballs by the Tomcats, hitting numerous pitches on the radar gun over 90 miles per hour, and used the off-speed to his advantage. Schweickert accumulated nine strikeouts and walked two en route to the win, his fourth of the spring.
