Union, N.J. (2/22/24) – The Kean University baseball team improved to 3-1 with a blanking of Widener University, 12-0, Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After retiring the side in order to start the game, the Cougars got on the board with two in the bottom of the first. Justin Teixeira led things off with a single and came around to score after an errant throw down the line. Gianni Marano lofted a sac fly for the quick 2-0 lead.
Kean added two more in the fourth as Tyler Stone led off with a triple. Later with the bases loaded, Christian Pellone lofted a sac fly and Dominic Masino later scored on a wild pitch.
The Cougars blew the game open in their half of the sixth all with two outs. Highlighting the frame was an RBI single from Pellone, a bases loaded walk from Trevor Coltenback, a two RBI single from Brett Hilsheimer, another bases loaded walk, this time from Stone and a two RBI single from Masino.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Marano (1-0) earned the win after tossing seven shutout innings. He allowed just two singles and one hit batter while fanning three.
Eighteen different Cougars made plate appearances today with Stone leading the offense with a homer shy of the cycle. He scored twice and recorded an RBI.
