Offense Explodes in 16-4 Rout at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C- Behind season-highs in hits and runs scored, the Washington and Lee University baseball team ran away with a 16-4 win over Greensboro College on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Generals (4-4) wasted no time in the first frame as Paul Ramseur drew a lead-off walk before Nick Lagges drove him in on a single to center field. Lagges would come around to score on a Andrew Thornton sacrifice fly to give the Blue and White a 2-0 lead. 
  • Campbell Charnceo roped a single into left field to keep the inning alive for W&L before Jacob Jackson beat out a grounder to the shortstop to put runners on the corners. Charneco caught the Pride's starting pitcher sleeping and stole home to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
  • Ethan Zulueta blasted a double into the right center field gap to kick off the top of the second inning before Lagges drew a walk to put runners on the corner. After Lagges stole second base, Drew Larsen sent a single into center field, driving in both runners to give the Generals a 5-0 lead.
  • Nick Marshall and Drake Carrick both got on base with doubles before Shane Garrett drove both of them in with a single to center field, cutting the Greensboro (7-1) deficit to three. 
  • Charneco and John Turner reached base on walks and advanced on the base path on an error. With two runners in scoring position, Zulueta ripped a two-RBI single to center field to put the Generals back up by five. Zulueta would come around to score the next at-bat as Ramseur hit an RBI double to right field.
  •  After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Ramseur would give the Generals a 9-2 lead as he scored on a Lagges single. 
  • With two outs in the fourth inning, Charneco kept the inning alive with a single to center field before Jackson drew a walk to put two runners aboard. After a passed ball moved both runners over, Jonathan French ripped a two-RBI single to center, putting W&L up 11-2.
  • Turner drew a walk in the next at-bat before him and French successfully completed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Zulueta came up big again for the Generals, driving in both runners as he found a gap in right field for a two-RBI double. 
  • Ramseur put the Generals up by 13 runs as he blasted a two-run homer to give W&L a 15-2 lead. 
  • Nick Marshall of Greensboro produced the Pride's final runs of the game as he drove in Chris Le and Alex Vazquez on a double to left center field, cutting the deficit to 11.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Thornton roped a double down the left field line to kick off the inning. Thornton then stole third and scored the final run of the game as Greensboro's catcher soared the ball into left field. 

W&L GAME NOTES

  • The Generals won their second-straight game this season while taking down the Pride for the first time since 2018. 
  • W&L's offense produced a season-high 16 hits and 16 runs this afternoon, their most runs since they scored 19 against Averett University on Feb. 16, 2022. 
  • Ethan Zulueta led the Generals with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, hitting two doubles and driving in a career-high four runs. Nick Lagges (3-for-4) recorded three hits with a walk and two RBIs. 
  • Paul Ramseur was 2-for-3 at the plate with two extra base hits, a double and a home run, while driving in three runs. 
  • The Blue and White swiped eight bags this afternoon, Nick Lagges and Jonathan Frencheach stole two bases this afternoon. 
  • Ben Sundell (1-0) earned the win after striking out a career-high five batters in his 4.1 innings pitched. The pitching staff held the Pride's offense who averaged 12.7 runs per game, to their lowest total of the season. 


GREENSBORO GAME NOTES

  • Greensboro (7-1) dropped their first contest of the 2024, snapping their seven game winning streak. 
  • Mo Lopez (1-1) earned the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in his two innings of action.
  • Nick Marhsall led the charge for the Pride's offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. 

UP NEXT

  • The Generals kick off ODAC play on Saturday as they travel to Hampden-Sydney College for a double header with the Tigers. Game one is set for 12 p.m. while game two will follow at 3 p.m.
