Saunders Sets CWRU Single-Game Strikeout Record in 11-8 Win over Trinity

Case Western Reserve University first-year left-handed pitcher Quinn Saunders struck out a program-record 14 batters on Tuesday morning to lead the Spartans to an 11-8 win over Trinity College (Conn.) at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, South Carolina.

The Spartans improved to 7-4 on the year with the win, while Trinity fell to 3-4 with the loss.

Making just his second collegiate start and third appearance, Saunders' 14 strikeouts over his six innings of work broke the 20-year-old school record of 13 strikeouts previously set by former Spartan Dan Ruef against WashU on March 7, 2004. Saunders allowed just three runs on three hits and two walks in the outing, earning the first win of his career and improving to 1-0 on the campaign.

Junior outfielder Logan Andreyko homered for the second straight game and finished the contest two-for-five with three runs, two RBIs, and a walk. Graduate student third baseman James Powers added a two-for-five showing with a double and four RBIs while graduate student catcher Jack Anderson, first-year designated hitter Carson Walker, graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso, and first-year shortstop Nate Arterburn each had a pair of hits.

Trinity took a lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but the Spartans responded quickly, tying the game before recording an out. Andreyko led the frame off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Anderson. Powers followed with a single to score Anderson and scored a run of his own with two outs on an RBI single from Alonso. Andreyko hit a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the second to increase the Spartans' lead to two and in the bottom of the third, junior left fielder Jay Smith drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an error to give the Spartans a 5-2 advantage.

Trinity scored a run in the top of the fourth to pull back within two runs, but the Spartans extended their lead further with a four-run fifth inning, scoring runs on an RBI fielder's choice by Andreyko and a bases-clearing double from Powers with the bases loaded, going ahead 9-3 after five innings.

The Bantams made an attempt at a comeback, scoring five runs in the eighth inning, but senior Tyler Horvath was able to strike out a batter with two outs and the bases loaded to end the threat and preserve a one-run lead. The Spartans added two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Alonso and a double from Arterburn, and Anderson entered the game in relief in the ninth, pitching a scoreless frame to clinch the victory and earn his second save of the year.

Trinity starter Ian Brown allowed nine runs in 4.2 innings and suffered the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year.

CWRU is scheduled for an off day on Wednesday but will return to action in Lexington on Thursday, March 14 at 2:30 p.m. against Oswego State.
