How It Happened
• The Diplomats threatened in the first as Spencer Berson doubled to deep right with one out. Bobby Falese then reached on an error to put Diplomats at the corners. Spartan starter Dillon Michaloski got a strikeout and on the play the Diplomats attempted a double steal but second baseman Lucas Prendergast made a great throw at the plate to cut down Berson for the third out of the inning.
• The Diplomats got on the board with some small ball in the third. Matt Hollender opened the inning with a sharp single to left. Designated hitter Nolan McCloskey put down a sacrifice bunt and Hollender never stopped at second as he scooted to third on the bunt. Michael von Zuben grounded out to short to score Hollender to take the 1-0 lead. The earned run was the first surrendered by Michaloski this year.
• York answered the Dips run with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. Prendergast was hit by a pitch with one out. He stole second and moved to third on an error. Robby Elzinga brought home Prendergast with a sacrifice fly to center, knotting the game at one.
• The Spartans took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. The rally started as Michael Tinneny drew a lead off walk. Connor Pickle singled to center to put runners at first and second. Chris Betler advanced the duo up 90 feet with a ground out to first. However, the Diplomats tried to get Pickle at second and throw sailed into left field, allowing Tinneny to score and Pickle to move to third. Brett DeWees drove home Pickle with a sacrifice fly to left. Luke Moser restarted the rally with a double down the left field line with two outs. Prendergast and Gabe Trevena were each hit by a pitch to load the bases. Elzinga scored two with a sharp single to center to put the Spartans up 5-1. The single was Elzinga's 150th career hit.
• York made it 6-1 in the fifth on a balk. The Spartans removed all doubt in the sixth as they scored three more runs on just one hit, pushing the lead to 9-1. The sixth inning featured a hit batter, three walks, a bunt single, a walk and a run scoring wild pitch.
• The Spartans added three more in the seventh as Elzinga had an RBI ground out and Tinneny had a two-run single to center, pushing the lead to 12-1.
• The Diplomats got one run back on Connor Rush pinch hit home run in the eighth. They added two more in the top of the ninth before the Spartans closed out the game for their 11th win of the year.
