DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team closed out its trip to Florida with a 4-2 record after a 5-2 loss to DePauw University on Wednesday at Northeast Regional Park.
DePauw (9-6) scored three times over the first two innings to take an early lead and held on to deal St. Olaf (9-8) just its second loss in its last seven games. The game was the first meeting between the Tigers and Oles since 2013.
Senior Joey Glampe was the only St. Olaf hitter to register multiple hits in the loss, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while sophomore Brendan Goldman hit a solo home run for the first home run of his collegiate career.
First year Nick Levasseur and junior Jacob Fickenscher combined to allow two earned runs on four hits over 6.2 innings of relief, with Levasseur striking out five over his 4.2 innings out of the bullpen. The outing was the longest of Levasseur's brief collegiate career so far.
St. Olaf plated a run in the top of the first when junior Evan Hammonds hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out double by Glampe, although Glampe was thrown out at third on the play. DePauw answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-out, two-run double to take a lead it would hold onto the rest of the way.
The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the second to stretch their lead to 3-1 before the Oles put their first two batters on in the top of the third but could not advance either runner. St. Olaf again put two runners on – this time with one out – in the fourth but could not score in a first-and-third situation.
After DePauw extended its lead to 4-1 on a solo home run to start the bottom of the sixth, Goldman hit his first collegiate home run with one out in the seventh to make it a two-run game. A two-out single by Glampe in the eighth got the tying run to the plate to no avail, as the Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth for the final run of the game.
St. Olaf is scheduled to host Concordia-Moorhead in its home and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m., permitting playable field conditions after the recent snowfall. The game is also slated to be Senior Day for the Oles.
