Hampden-Sydney Splits Doubleheader At Guilford (NC); Wins Opener 9-7, Drops Nightcap 10-5

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) collected five hits and five RBIs, and sophomore Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) had three hits and three RBIs, including the first two home runs of his collegiate career, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Guilford (NC) College on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sophomore Jake Williams (Chesapeake) gained the pitching win in the 9-7 opener for the visiting Tigers (9-13, 3-9), the first of his collegiate career, while classmate Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) earned the mound save. Freshman Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) took the pitching setback in the 10-5 nightcap against the host Quakers (10-13, 3-7).

In game one, H-SC scored nine runs on 15 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning, three runs in the second, one run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and two runs in the ninth. GC scored seven runs on eight hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning, three runs in the fifth, two runs in the seventh and one run in the ninth.

In the first, sophomore Matthew Arnold (Danville) (2-4, RBI) reached on a two-out single up the middle, advanced to second base on an infield single by Lancaster (2-4, 3 RBIs), and scored on an RBI single through the right side by freshman Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (2-4, 2 RBIs) for an early 1-0 advantage.

In the second, junior Grayson Harris (Moseley) (2-5, RBI) was hit by a pitch with two outs, moved to second base on a single up the middle by classmate Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (3-6) and each runner advanced when Arnold was hit by a pitch, as well, to load the bases. Lancaster promptly followed with a two-run single down the right field line to plate both Harris and Masterson with Arnold going to third, and Arnold scored when Moore once-again followed with an RBI single through the right side for a 4-1 lead.

In the fourth, Masterson doubled to left center field to open the frame, moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate courtesy of a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Lancaster with one out for a 5-1 advantage.

In the fifth, Farr (2-4, 2 RBIs) led off with a solo home run to center field, his first homer at the College. Harris had a two-out single up the middle, advanced to second base on a single through the left side by Masterson, and scored on a run-scoring single by Arnold, also through the left side, for a 7-1 lead.

In the ninth, Farr hit his second home run of the game, season and career, this time to left center field with one out. Freshman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-5) followed with a single up the middle and was replaced by junior Jahiem Green (Stafford) as a pinch-runner. Green promptly stole second base, his team-leading 10th of the season, and scored with two outs when Harris provided an RBI double to right center field to make it 9-6 toward the final two-run margin.

Williams (1-1) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 5.0 innings for his first collegiate pitching win, scattering five hits and four runs, all earned, with a career-high nine strikeouts and one walk. Junior Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) tossed 2.0 innings, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Jackson Barnett (Ashland) pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks. Fitz-Hugh (4) tossed the final inning, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks for his team-leading fourth save of the season.

In game two, H-SC scored five runs on seven hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth and two runs in the eighth. GC scored 10 runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, four runs in the second, three runs in the fourth and one run in the sixth.

In the third, Howell walked to open the frame and advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI double to left center field by sophomore Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-3, RBI). Wilson moved to third on a ground ball and crossed the plate courtesy of another wild pitch to cut the early deficit to 6-2.

In the fourth, Lancaster (3-4, 2 RBIs) doubled down the left field line to begin the at-bat and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Moore, and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI in foul territory off the left field line by Farr (1-3, RBI) to make it 6-3.

In the eighth, Harris (1-4) singled up the middle with two outs and advanced to second base when Masterson drew a walk, and the bases were loaded after Arnold (1-4) reached on an infield single. Lancaster provided a two-run double to left center field that plated both Harris and Masterson to provide for the final five-run margin.

Emhoff (2-3) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 1.1 inning, allowing two hits and five runs, all earned, with one strikeout and three walks. Junior Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) tossed 2.1 innings, yielding five hits and four runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Senior Jack Bourdon (Madison) recorded one out, allowing one hit and no runs with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Hank Blanton (Midlothian) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run, unearned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Senior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) recorded one out, allowing no hits and no runs with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Alex Caruso (Appomattox) tossed a scoreless inning, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Ty Herndon (Richmond) also pitched a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with one strikeout and no walks.
