Radcliffe Gem, Late RBI from Zawacki, Merrick Pushes Baseball Over Wheaton

Norton, MA --- A complete game shutout from Owen Radcliffe (Holliston, MA) and a two-out ninth-inning rally pushed the WPI baseball team to a 2-0 victory on the road at Wheaton on Tuesday afternoon. The win lifts the Engineers to 13-7 overall, 1-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Lyons fall to 9-6, dropping their first conference game to go to 3-1.

Radcliffe threw nine innings of shutout ball, scattering five hits to move to 2-2 on the season. He struck out a career-high 10 batters, issuing just one walk in the game.

Offensively, WPI headed into the ninth with just five total hits, before belting four in the deciding frame. With one out, Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) singled through the left side but a fly-out followed. With two outs, an infield single from Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) put runners on the corners for Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) who singled down the right field line for a 1-0 lead. Spencer Merrick (Abington, MA) then beat out an infield single which scored Roethlein to make it 2-0 before Wheaton got out of the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Radcliffe worked around a walk and an infield single from Mike Maher (Jefferson, MA). An infield fly was the first out of the inning before Ra ground ball to third, which Roethlein corralled for a double-play to seal the WPI victory.

For the game, the Engineers were paced by two hits each from Merrick and Cash, while Zawacki and Merrick drove in the only two runs.

Radcliffe dueled Wheaton's Aiden Cardoza (Dartmouth, MA) who threw 8.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts. He suffered the loss to move to 2-2. Jackson Walsh (Cumberland, RI) threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on three hits.

Wheaton's offense was led by Casey Wensley (Raynham, MA), who finished 2-for-3 with a double.

The Lyons threatened in the bottom of the second, as a one-out single from Wagner started the rally. Wensley doubled to put runners on second and third, but Radcliffe got the final two batters on a line-out and a ground out to end the threat.

In the top of the fourth, WPI's Cash reached on a lead-off single, but after a fielder's choice, a double-play got the Lyons out of the inning.

Neither team had more than one on in an inning, until the action-packed ninth where the Engineers did their damage and halted the Lyons 13-game winning streak in the series dating back to March of 2017.

WPI continues NEWMAC play on Saturday at Holy Cross with a noon doubleheader. Wheaton is back in action on Thursday, hosting Suffolk at 3:30pm.
