Blue Jays' Bats Erupt in 21-2 Win over Mitchell

AUBURNDALE, FL. – The Johns Hopkins baseball team opened up its Spring Break trip to Florida in a big way Thursday afternoon, using a season-best 20 hits to cruise to a 21-2 win over Mitchell College.

Hopkins (6-3) wasted no time building a lead in Thursday's game, with Isaiah Winikur and Matthew Cooper getting on base with a pair of single before a Dillon Souvignier double to right center scored the duo to put the Jays up 2-0.

An RBI single from Alex Shane in the top of the second made it a 3-0 game before Mitchell (7-4) scored its only runs of the afternoon in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead down to one. After a scoreless fourth, Hopkins needed just two hits to bring four across the plate in the fifth to blow the game open.

Souvignier and Lukas Geer drew walks to put two on with no outs, setting up Caleb Cyr to crank his first homer of the season the left field, putting the Blue Jays up 6-2. Dylan Whitney restarted play with another walk, advancing to second on a wild pitch before a Winikur single scored the junior to make it a five-run game halfway into the contest.

Following another shutdown inning by Kieren Collins (2-0) on the mound, another wild pitch as well as a trio of RBIs from Cyr, Whitney and Shane put Hopkins up 11-2 before the floodgates opened in an eight-hit, 10-run seventh inning.

Jimmy Stevens opened the inning with his first hit of the day, advancing to second after Jacob Harris drew a walk and scoring on a single to center from Shawn Steuerer. Harris was next to score on another single from Jackson Roloff before it was Steuerer's turn to cross home plater after Tripp Myers drew an RBI walk. Jake Siani walked in another run, setting up Damian Brown and Harris to hit a pair of triples to bring in five more runs before Jimmy Nunez tacked on the 10th and final run of the frame with a single back up the middle to score Harris.

Cole Eggleston — who entered in the sixth inning — allowed one walk in the seventh before fanning the final two batters to enforce the run rule and secure the 21-2 win for Hopkins.

The Blue Jays are back in action Friday, March 15 to take on Webster, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.

Inside the Box Score – Johns Hopkins
• Collins secured a well-earned win in Thursday's game to move to 2-0 on the year. In his third start of the season, the graduate student allowed just three hits and two runs — both unearned — in 5.2 innings of work.

• Hopkins' 20 hits are a season-high, a feat the program achieved on five different occasions last season. Thirteen different players registered a hit, with 16 reaching base safely.

• Winikur went 3-4 from the leadoff spot for the Blue Jays. Since going 0-3 in the team's season-opener, the graduate student has tallied at least one hit in every game since, batting .385 in that span.

• Cyr's home run was his first of the season, making him the seventh different player to go yard this season. His seven RBIs — four of which came today — ranks second on the team.

• With his triple today, Damian Brown has a slugging percentage of 1.714. The sophomore has four hits on the season in seven at-bats, with a pair of home runs and today's triple representing three of them.
