Allegheny Sweeps Twin Bill at Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Allegheny baseball traveled north to Hamburg, N.Y. to face Hilbert in a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday (May 1), picking up a sweep of the Hawks.

The Gators took game one 10-6 and game two 12-6.

Game One - Allegheny 10, Hilbert 6

The Gators got to work quickly. Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) started the game off with a double. Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) was walked to put two runners on. Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) hit a sacrifice fly to score Dougherty for the game's first run. After that, William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) hit a two-run home run to increase the lead to 3-0. The home run was his third of the year.

Allegheny tacked on seven more runs in the second off of seven hits. Bryant-Dawson drove in two runs that frame while Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley), Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely), Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) Dougherty and Jennings also brought a run in as the lead grew to 10-0.

The Hawks fought back, putting up six runs in the final five innings, but it was not enough to overcome the early Allegheny lead.

Inside the Box

  • Dougherty, Jennings and Sharp had two hits apiece.
  • Wolff hit a two-run home run, his third of the year.
  • Bryant-Dawson drove in three runs.
  • John Doney (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) got the start on the mound, earning the win. He allowed just one hit and one run while striking out four in three innings.
  • Walker Cunningham (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs), Aidan Bilder (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Dylan Fanelli (Berkley, Calif./California High) also pitched in the game.

Game Two - Allegheny 12, Hilbert 6

The Gators struck first once again in game two. Andrew Stablewski (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Academy) was walked in the leadoff spot. After a Jennings single, Bryant-Dawson grounded out, but was able to plate Stablewski. The lead was short lived though as Hilbert scored twice in the bottom of the frame.

Allegheny would regain the lead with a three-run third. Similar to the first, Stablewski was walked before a Jennings hit, this time a double. JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) hit into an error that allowed both runners to score. Nolin then tripled to bring Robinson around as the Gators led 4-1.

Hilbert threatened again the third with the bases loaded and no outs, but Ben Shields (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi Area) navigated the Gators out of the jam unscathed.

After getting out of the jam, the Gators had another quality inning in the fourth, scoring four more runs. Dowden had first tally off an error before Robinson drove Stablewski home. Another error by the Hawks allowed Stablewski to score. Tomasso Floro (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) drove Jennings before Robinson came across the plate on a double steal attempt as the lead went to 7-2.

Each team scored a run in the fifth. The Allegheny run came from Nolin. After a double and a steal of third, Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) drove him in.

Bryant-Dawson tripled in the sixth before Tommy Landsnes (Richmond, Va./Brunswick Academy) drove him in on a pinch hit double. Landsnes would also score in the inning off a Nolin single.

Hilbert made up some ground, scoring a run in the sixth, but the Gators answered in the seventh. Dougherty had a pinch hit single and scored off a Jennings double.

The Hawks added one more run in the sixth, but it was not enough to overcome the Allegheny lead.
