Baseball Drops Heartbreaker in Series Finale Against #9 Lynchburg

Rocky Mount, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team fell in its second one-run game of the weekend, dropping a 12-11 decision in the series finale against the Hornets.

Lynchburg got off to a scorching start, plating seven runs in the top of the first as Wesleyan starter Drake Hobgood struggled with control, walking all six batters he faced. Bryce Demory capped the inning with a two-run homer, scoring Eric Hiett. The Hornets added another run in the second on a Gavin Collins RBI groundout, putting the Bishops in an 8-0 hole.

Despite the deficit, the Bishops mounted a determined comeback. Wesleyan scratched across runs in the third and fourth innings, starting with a Jackson Ellyson sacrifice fly to get on the board. In the fourth, Maison Nance doubled to right, scoring Caleb Elias.

A five-run fifth inning brought Wesleyan back into the contest. Three straight hits from Jacob TrivetteTravis Gamache, and Maison Nance ignited the dugout, while Brady Williams and Jackson Hobbs contributed productive RBI groundouts. The momentum carried into the sixth when Hobbs launched Wesleyan's first home run of the season to left field, cutting the deficit to 10-7.

Lynchburg tacked on a crucial 12th run in the seventh, with shortstop Brandon Garcia delivering a sacrifice fly.

With the game on the line in the ninth, Wesleyan made one final push. Seth Jones doubled to bring home Nance, and Hobbs added an RBI single to left to score Jones. However, in a dramatic conclusion, Javier Quintana was thrown out at the plate, sealing the Hornets' 12-11 victory.
