GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior third baseman Matthew Arnold (Danville) had two hits and three RBIs, and senior left fielder Christian Chambers (Midlothian) had a double and three RBIs, as well, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 13-5 season-opening and non-conference baseball road win at Greensboro (NC) College on Tuesday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) gained the pitching victory for the visiting Tigers (1-0), while junior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) earned a save against the host Pride (3-1). It was also the first collegiate coaching victory for first-year head coach Michael Mulvey in his first game leading the Garnet & Grey.
H-SC scored 13 runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring one run in the first inning, two runs each in the second, third and fourth innings, four runs in the fifth and one run each in the eighth and ninth innings. GC scored five runs on 10 hits with three errors … scoring three runs in the first inning and one run each in the sixth and eighth innings.
In the first, junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (2-5) opened the game and season with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch, and later scored on a one-out single to right field by Arnold (2-5, 3 RBIs) for an early 1-0 advantage.
In the second, senior right fielder and team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) (2-4, RBI) reached on a one-out fielding error, stole second, and scored courtesy of an RBI single to left center field by freshman catcher Robert Chapman (Woodbridge) (1-4, RBI). It was Chapman's first collegiate at-bat, resulting in the run-scoring hit. Chapman later advanced to third on a two-out infield single by sophomore second baseman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (2-6, RBI). Chapman then crossed the plate via a wild pitch, moving Howell to second, and the game was tied at 3-3.
In the third, junior designated hitter Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (2-5, RBI) led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a double to left field by senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-2), and both runners scored when Chambers (1-2, 3 RBIs) followed with a two-run double to right field for a 5-3 lead.
In the fourth, Wilson led off with a single to left field, advanced to third when Howell reached base on another fielding error, and scored when Arnold followed with an RBI single to center field. Howell later crossed the plate when Chambers provided a sacrifice fly RBI to right field with one out for a 7-3 advantage.
In the fifth, Lancaster walked to begin the frame, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chapman and moved to third on a passed ball. Following a walk to Wilson, Lancaster scored on a one-out RBI single to left field by Howell, advancing Wilson to third, and he scored on a two-out RBI single to right field by Farr. Howell later crossed the plate on another wild pitch, before walks to both Harris and Chambers loaded the bases. A third-straight walk, this time to senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (RBI), allowed Farr to score and it was an eight-run margin at 11-3.
In the eighth, Lancaster drew a walk to lead off and stole second ahead of a walk to Chapman. Wilson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Arnold then walked with one out to force Lancaster across the plate for a 12-4 lead.
In the ninth, Chambers walked to begin the at-bat and advanced to second on a ground ball out, before scoring on an RBI double to right center field by Lancaster to provide for the final 13-5 margin of victory.
Austin (1-0) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 6.0 innings for the win, scattering seven hits and four runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and no walks. Fitz-Hugh (1) followed with the final 3.0 innings for the save, allowing three hits and one run, earned, with six strikeouts and one walk. It was Fitz-Hugh's sixth career save.
H-SC is scheduled to play on the road at the University of Mary Washington in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon, February 20, at 2:30 p.m. in Fredericksburg.
