Four-Run Sixth in Game Two Propels Tornados to First Win of Carone Era

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Baseball team (1-4) used a four-run sixth inning in game two of Friday's home opener at Gil Coan Field to secure its first win of the 2025 campaign, taking a 7-3 victory over Toccoa Falls (6-2).

Interim Head Coach Vinny Carone earned the first collegiate coaching victory of his career with the triumph in game two.

Earlier in the day, the visiting Screaming Eagles earned a 4-1 victory in a seven-inning game one that kicked off a scheduled three-game set between Brevard and Toccoa Falls

GAME ONE: TOCCOA FALLS 4, BREVARD 1

Brevard scored the first run of the 2025 home campaign in the bottom of the third inning when Nico Bartolotti pushed a single through the right side of the infield that brought Hayden Jennings around to score. However, that proved to be the lone run of the contest for the Tornados as TFC scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth to claim a 4-1 victory. The Tornados were hampered by missed opportunities in the contest, as Brevard left a total of 10 runners on base.

Cale Oehler had a multi-hit outing in the series opener, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double. Frankie Vasquez added a double, as eight different Tornados recorded hits. BC outhit TFC 9-4 in the matchup.

Jordan Searcy (0-2) got the ball to start the series off for Brevard, lasting four and two-thirds innings allowing two hits and three runs (two ER) with five strikeouts. Andy FahringerAndrew Bernard, and Hatcher Bailey all worked out of the pen for the Tornados, with Bernard recording his first collegiate strikeout.

TFC produced opportune offense in game one, with a sacrifice bunt scoring the tying run in the top of the fourth. The Screaming Eagles then forced a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fourth that was immediately followed by a crucial two-RBI single, giving the visitors a three-run cushion, 4-1.

Brevard got two on with two outs in the bottom-half of the fifth, but a strikeout ended the rally threat. BC then got two aboard with one away in the bottom of the sixth, but a pop up and a lineout kept the Screaming Eagles clear by three heading into the final inning of action. Oehler drove a  one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Brevard was handed its fourth defeat of the season after a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.

GAME TWO: BREVARD 7, TOCCOA FALLS 3

King got things going early for Brevard, roping a two-out RBI triple into the left-center field cap, scoring Tyler Kelson for the first run of game two. King ended up scoring via a wild pitch as Brevard held an early 2-0 lead.

TFC put together a rally in the top of the third following a walk, single, and a one-out wild pitch. The Screaming Eagles utilized a two-RBI single to tie things up at two runs apiece.

The visitors threatened further, loading up the bases in the top of the fourth with nobody out. However, the damage was limited by Zach Wilson and the Tornado defense, as BC surrendered just one run in the frame. Brevard answered back in the bottom of the fourth as Bartolotti scored on a wild pitch.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, BC cashed in heavy in the bottom of the sixth with four runs. Jackson Mix roped a double to center in his first at-bat as a Tornado that brought Bartolotti around to score. Hunter Busque brought Mix around in the ensuing at bat, giving BC a 5-3 edge. Brevard would add two more to that lead with Oehler drawing a bases-loaded walk and Kelson hitting an RBI fielder's choice, ballooning BC's lead to a 7-3 margin.

The lead would prove too much for the Screaming Eagles to overcome, as BC took care of business for its first win of the season.

Colin Weathers (1-0) came on in relief of Wilson and earned his first collegiate victory on the mound. Weathers did not allow a hit in 3.1 innings of work while striking out two batters.

Bartolotti and Logan Sawyer each had multi-hit outings, with Bartolotti also coming around twice to score. Bartolotti, Mix, and Sawyer all logged doubles, with King hitting BC's second triple of the season.

BC is scheduled to close out the three-game set with Toccoa Falls at home on Sunday at 3 p.m.
