#15 Cortland Loses 2-1 Pitchers' Duel vs. #9 Lynchburg

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lynchburg, ranked ninth nationally D3baseball.com and seventh by the ABCA, defeated Cortland, 2-1, at the D3 Showcase tournament. The Hornets improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Red Dragons, ranked 15th by D3baseball.com and 19th by the ABCA, dropped to 1-1.
 
The teams combined for only four hits in the game - three by Cortland and one by Lynchburg. Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) walked, stole second with one out and scored on a two-out single by Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck).
 
Lynchburg scored its two runs without a hit in the bottom of the second. Sean Pokorak led off with a walk and Joe Munitz put down a sac bunt and was safe at first on a throwing error. With one out, Eric Hiett and Parker Cato drew back-to-back walks to tie the game, and with two outs the Hornets scored their second run on an error.
 
Tyler Kaltreider earned the win with five innings of two-hit ball. He struck out six and walked one. The transfer from Division I VMI is now 2-0 on the season. Colin McGuire allowed one hit and one walk and fanned six over the final four innings for his second save.
 
Cortland starter Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview) allowed no hits and struck out two in two and a third innings but walked five batters. Dylan Beers (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) entered in the third with one out and runners on first and second and struck out two batters to end the inning. He ended up tossing four and two thirds innings of hitless ball with one walk and seven strikeouts. Lawrence Citrola (East Northport/Northport) gave up one hit and struck out one in the eighth.
 
Kringdon finished 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI for Cortland. Benton Jones had the lone hit for Lynchburg - a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth.
 
Cortland will face Christopher Newport, ranked 11th by D3baseball.com and 14th by the ABCA, Sunday at 2 p.m., followed by a contest versus Denison, ranked fifth by D3baseball.com and fourth by the ABCA.
