W&L Soars Past Falcons in D3 Showcase Finale

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team secured their second win of the season, defeating the Pfeiffer University Falcons 6-2 in the finale of the D3 Showcase.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a 1-2-3 inning from the Falcons (0-6), Nick Lagges kept the bottom of the first alive with a two-out triple to left field before coming around to score on a wild pitch.
  • Both offenses were kept in check by the pitching staffs until Levi Barrett kicked off the fifth inning with a solo blast to left field, tying the game at one.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Generals (2-1) scored three runs on three hits to retake the lead, 4-1. Campbell Charneco led off the inning with a single before Lagges joined him on the base path after drawing a six-pitch walk. Following a Jack Belbot sacrifice bunt, singles from Andrew Thornton and Paul Ramseur drove in both Charneco and Lagges, putting the Blue and White up 3-1.
  • With runners on the corners, the Generals perfectly executed a double steal to score their final run of the inning. Ramseur took off for second, forcing Pfeiffer's pitcher to step off, allowing Thornton to steal home and extend the Generals' lead to three runs.
  • Pfeiffer cut the Blue and White's lead in half after Josh Turner singled down the right-field line, driving in James Eason from second base.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Thornton singled to center and Ramseur reached base on an error to put two runners on. Ramseur then stole second base to put both runners in scoring position before Mike Carpenter roped a single into right field, extending the Generals' lead to 6-2.
  • Raleigh Craft closed out the game for the Blue and White on the mound, striking out the first two batters before forcing a pop-up to secure his first save of the season and a 6-2 win.
