#13 RMC Baseball Earns Series Win over MU

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and freshman Brian Fleming (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) both knocked in two in the nightcap as the No. 13 Randolph-Macon baseball team split a doubleheader with Messiah on Sunday afternoon to record a series win.

Game 1

How It Happened:

  • Senior Bere Bauers (Phoenixville, Pa./Devon Prep) of the Yellow Jackets and Christian Foltz of the Falcons locked into a pitchers' duel in the opener. Messiah tallied an unearned run in the top of the fourth for the lone run of the game. Bauers scattered five hits over seven innings with no walks and a career-best 12 strikeouts. Foltz allowed two hits over seven frames with two walks and eight punchouts to pick up the win.

  • Lautenschlager and junior Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had hits for RMC.
  • Sophomore Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) reached base twice with a hit batsman and a walk.
  • The seven-inning contest was played in 1:43.

Game 2

How It Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets put up two in the bottom of the first in the nightcap. Freshman CJ Chatterton (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) had a leadoff double and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Lautenschlager. Sophomore Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) walked and came home on a double play as RMC took a 2-0 edge.
  • RMC added to its lead in the fourth. Lautenschlager had a leadoff triple to left center and scored on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 3-0. Harvey walked and scored on a single by Fleming as the lead grew to 4-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets put up another crooked number in the fifth. Chatterton drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Wernoski was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's). Chatterton scored on a base hit by Lautenschlager and a sacrifice fly by senior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./The Miller School) plated Wernoski to make it 6-0. Quici ripped a triple to knock in Lautenschlager and Quici scored on a single by Fleming to make it 8-0.
  • The Falcons scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh to cut the deficit in half before the Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the eighth. Fleming had his third hit of the contest and was replaced on first base by junior Nathan Chen (South Riding, Va./Freedom). Sophomore Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) sacrificed Chen to second. Chen went to third on a wild pitch and came home on a single by junior Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) to make the final 9-4.

By The Numbers

  • Senior Gavin Tomlin (Capron, Va./Southampton) was the starter and winner, allowing one hit over four innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.
  • Senior Michael Shanahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) pitched the final 3.2 innings with two hits and one run to record the save.
  • Fleming finished with three hits and two RBI.
  • Lautenschlager went 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs and two RBI.
  • Chatterton also scored twice for RMC.
