SALISBURY, Md. – Trent Waire hit a walkoff two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning, securing the seventh-ranked Salisbury University baseball team's 3-2 victory over the Widener Pride on Saturday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.
After each side went down scoreless in the first three innings, the Pride scratched across a run each in the fourth and fifth. Sean Burke gave WU the lead with a two-out RBI double in the fourth, while Jack Balcer came through with his own two-out RBI double in the fifth to put the Pride up 2-0.
The Sea Gulls got both runs back in the home fifth. Danny Sheeler worked a one-out walk, and Dylan Winebrenner followed with a two-sacker to bring him in. Noah Burroughs then lashed a single into center, scoring Winebrenner to tie it at 2-2.
The teams matched each other zero for zero through the next four innings. Salisbury had a chance to win it in the ninth, putting men on first and second with one out, but Winebrenner's hot shot to short was snagged by Burke, who tossed over to second for the force to complete the inning-ending double play.
Burroughs led off the 10th with a single up the middle, then pinch-hitter Ethan Ruiz laid down a sac bunt to get pinch-runner Cole Swift to second. Ben Anderson was then hit by a pitch, and BK Wilson rolled into a fielder's choice to force out Swift at third. Up came Waire, who dunked a soft liner into left that Balcer dove for and missed, allowing Anderson to come in with the winning run and send Williams Stadium into a frenzy.
