Baseball Drops Doubleheader at LaGrange

LaGrange, GA - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader on the road at LaGrange, falling 6-4 in game one before coming up short in a high-scoring 18-9 contest in game two. The losses move the Bishops to 2-8 on the season.

Game One

LaGrange jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the first inning and adding another in the second for a quick 4-0 advantage. Wesleyan battled back in the fifth when Javier Quintana scored on a passed ball, followed by an RBI single from Marlon Bowen that brought home Travis Gamache to cut the deficit to 4-2.

LaGrange responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2. The Bishops kept fighting, adding a run in the sixth on a Quintana RBI single that scored Jacob TrivetteMalachi Hayes drove in another run in the seventh to bring Wesleyan within two, but the Bishops were unable to push across any further runs as LaGrange held on for the 6-4 win.

Bowen and Trivette each collected two hits to lead the Wesleyan offense. Nathanael Volk took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings of work. Marc Dennunzio provided 4.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits.

Game Two

The Bishops and Panthers combined for 27 runs in a wild back-and-forth affair. After falling behind 4-0, Wesleyan surged ahead in the fifth thanks to a grand slam from Trivette, his fourth home run of the season, tying the game at 4-4.

LaGrange responded with a massive seven-run seventh inning to break the game open and added seven more in the eighth to put the contest out of reach. Wesleyan continued to battle, scoring two runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth, including RBI singles from Hayes, Jackson Hobbs, and Brady Williams, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Trivette led the Bishops at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Williams added two hits and two RBI, while Hobbs also recorded two hits in the loss. Preston Workman suffered the defeat on the mound, surrendering six runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings.
