VERO BEACH, Fla. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University baseball rallied for a 4-3 comeback win over Capital to earn a doubleheader split against the Comets at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Fla. on Tuesday.
Both games were seven-inning contests. The Comets built a 14-1 lead in game one and held off a late charge by the Yellow Jackets to earn a 14-10 win. Waynesburg overcame a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth and Jordan Mosely delivered Waynesburg to an extra-inning victory with a walk-off single in the eighth.
Waynesburg moves to 3-4 on the season while Capital stands at 4-5.
Game 1 – Capital 14, Waynesburg 10
The Comets scored at least three runs in four of the first five innings as they built a 14-1 lead. Capital mashed a three-run homer in the first, a bases-clearing triple in the second and a three-run double in the fifth.
Waynesburg answered with six runs in the sixth. Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) drove in two with an RBI triple and scored on a base hit by Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler). Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) and Garrett Comer (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) each had run-scoring singles in the sixth.
In the seventh, Vincent Turner (Bridgeport, W.Va. / Bridgeport) and Comer each notched two-out RBI doubles before Capital recorded the final out to secure the 14-10 victory.
Williams and Comer each had three hits and doubled and tripled in the game. Comer drove in three runs while Williams and Engelmore each had two RBI.
The Jackets used five different pitchers in the ballgame. Mo Kiger (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) recorded the final four outs without allowing a run.
Game 2 – Waynesburg 4, Capital 3 (8 innings)
Capital led 3-0 after five innings thanks to a three-run third inning. Waynesburg answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene) knocked in the Jackets' first run of the game with an RBI single and Mount tied the game with a two-run base hit. Waynesburg looked to take the lead on a sacrifice fly but the go-ahead run was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Comets had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh. Lucas Lybarger (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) made a diving catch in left field to rob Capital of an opportunity to score a go-ahead run.
Waynesburg loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to plate the winning run as a force out at home, strikeout and flyout ended the frame.
Matthew Corte-Gaskill (Wake Forest, N.C. / Knightdale) sat down the Comets in order in the eighth. Mount smacked a leadoff double for the Jackets in the eighth and Mosely delivered a two-out walk-off single to right center to give Waynesburg the 4-3 victory.
Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) threw three scoreless innings out of the Waynesburg bullpen. Corte-Gaskill posted tow innings without allowing a run or a hit and was credited as the winning pitcher.
Mount went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Waynesburg's varsity squad returns to action on Friday with a doubleheader against Elizabethtown.
